Hi all

So I am looking at buying a 30ft buttcat in the near future and I would prefer not to put the boat on the mooring. When I was in Houtbay this weekend, I saw a boat storage yard. Most of you guys problably know which one I am talking about.  They have a tractor with wich they launch your boat. In my opinion this would be a better option than putting it on the moorings as the boat would need repairs every 6 months or every year. So I would like to know from the guys with the bigger boats:

1. Is there a similar service available in Simonstown?

2. What is the better option.....mooring/storage?

3. Anyone have a 30ft butt cat for sale? lol

Hiya

Simons Town does not have a boat yard. Only Houtbay.

The problem with HOUTBAY is that their boatyard is pretty full, especially if you're looking at leaving a 30' cat there. They have a very long waiting list.....

Your ONLY option is a mooring, unless you know somebody at the boatyard in Houtbay!!

There is a storage facility in Sunvalley called Storage land where quite a few boats are parked, am sure you will find their contact details online or in the book! I think there are some sealiners that leave their boat there!

Seems like that one is not next to the Harbour? A 30ft buttcat's trailer is too wide to legally tow.

But how do your get a mooring, unless you have a truck full of Dollars?
Simple, you RENT a mooring. All the clubs will how-ever need you to become a member........

The biggest issue is finding the right spot!! The boatyard has to be close to the water. Many guys who leave their boats in the boatyard have simple launching trailers and not road legal trailers. So, its a simple short tow to the slip....

Houtbay is pretty much sorted. Don't think you'll be able to get land inside the harbour for such a venture.

Simonstown is having problems with PARKING of boat trailers, so space is a HUGE issue there.

That leaves Millers Point and Harbour island. Worth looking at what land is available at Millers.....

You BIGGEST problem with a 30' cat is that its beam is too wide to be towed legally on the road. You will need to get a 'wide load' permit and will require an escort vehicle, with signage and flashing lights. Not really viable.......

Your best solution, put her on a mooring........

I did not have a problem getting space in Hout Bay - even at short notice. Granted I don't have a 30ft boat but I'm sure they would not mind pocketing an extra R3k a month. There is enough space there for 2 deck boats and a host of others to be worked on (and dirty up my ride :( )

Millers land is council land and when last in a club meeting around a year ago it could not be developed.
The club land (on an extended lease from council) is and will be developed to house boat "sheds". Good luck launching a 30ft Butt at millers though, you will struggle and that's not me being negative but I've launched a 28ft Butt there and we battled our backsides off and we had a unimog. It was also high tide and the wall had not collapsed.

Simons Town has no space and the big space that looks available belongs to the marina company which is it's own business and is for the servicing of boats and yachts. That land will not be developed as it's already pretty cramped.

I also know that you will find space at Hout Bay. You will have an easier time of it if you join ABC.

30ft...
Put it on a mooring.
The down side is Simons Town is very pushed for mooring space at the moment.
However there is plan for new moorings to be built but this will take some time. I am not sure of the timings (should listen in the meetings I guess).

Then there's GBay which when I last looked had mooring space as did ABC.

Good Luck.

a buddy of mine also recently joined hout bay and managed to get parking for his boat in the yard straight away, i recon they will try their best to squeeze as many boats as possible in there!!

Must say - Simonstown is the PLACE! Nicest place I would want to have the boat. Good for the wife & kids too. Very Good! And when you look at the management team it is even more appealing, future looks good. No bulldust. Going big places as a club methinks. Yup.

As is GB. Arguably best location in False Bay - but add a good few lt of juice, and a bit of extra hrs in time in each direction - runs are long.

My tuppence'worth......

By the way - NICE BOAT!!!!

I have secure parking for a few boats in Hout Bay---not very far from the harbour.

I can provide the parking cheaper than the Boatyard---email me give me a call to discuss.
