Hi all

Im planning to start my own Charter fishing business.
Please advise where do I start or is there anyone with an existing business I can buy into. I have my own jetski and a boat fully equipped with all tackle.

I am really serious this can be a dream come true or any advice to start such a business would be appreciated.

Many thanks

I'd also like some guidance, there are wonderful opportunities for good charters in Northern Australia

My advice to anyone thinking about living your dream.. is to live it, not to think about it! The rest, although uphill, has a way of taking care of itself. I know nothing about charters but life is too short, live your dream, give it one of the best shots that you can. You can check the barometer, check the reports and charts and consult the tides but in reality you don't know till you go.

If you want to be a charter operator with a million bucks in the bank start with 10 million and you'll be at one pretty soon. Its an incredibly hard way to make a living and there's not much money in it approach with caution you'll be turning a passion into a job and its not for everyone.

Ja I have an idea the reality is far removed from the dream.
A few charters around here went under after less than a year.
I've been out with a few of the old ones, wouldn't say they are very successful and it's incredibly hard work with no time off when the season is on.
And dealing with people is never easy.
Nice to dream though..

Lot of good inputs.

Same as all of us who do any type of fishing guiding.

1. SA citizens always believe they can rather do it on their own and are loathe to pay for your services.

2. There is a reason all run of the mill charters have shoddy tackle and gear on board with well used Kendal Round hooks on their reels

3. Key point made here is that in season you are busy 100% of the time. Problem is that due to weather and water conditions you are only able to use, maybe 70% of the season.

The rest of the year isn't season and you're largely limited to working weekends only, if the water is good.

Your crew needs to be paid if you are fishing or not as they need an income.

Get a commercial license and fish commercial when not doing charters, consider then that when you charter you are taking money/income from the crew

4. Having a full time employment will allow you subsidise the charter business and even put a skipper on retainer who can run your charter when you are working.

My opinion is that at best running a charter affords you more time on the water and pays for your non charter fishing trips.

It'll never provide income to buy the boat and equipemtn nor provide a decent income to run a household and put the kids through school.

But that's just my opinion.

I'm in the charter business myself and living the dream. Its hard but rewarding.Step 1 go to SAMSA register your boat its got to go for a new inspection. Obtain a DTD or your local department of transport no.its easy . Register your Business vat extra. But with the SAMSA registration you can start working. Regards Jakes.

Haha I'm not standing in anyone's way bud if you have what it takes go for it! I work abroad in cool locations guiding guys to great fish but I'm still a salary earner (meager salary I survive on my tips) not a business owner. I've had more than a few people approach me to start a charter in SA and I'm honestly not interested at this point mostly for the reasons outlines by Enigma.

Hi Jakes, that is good info. BTW is saw you guys on Sunday at Wilson Wharf and it seems like your guys had a good catch.

We fished but was disappointed. I think the dude was afraid of using fuel we literally fished just outside the harbour over a single reef the entire day.

Anyway, I will give you a shout next time I am down...

One thing I have learnt the hard way after many charter trips over the years. Pay the extra and go for the best. You will rarely be disappointed
