Hi All,


I'm new to carp angling and would like to know if there are any prefered rigs for kariba worms?

Additionally what other insect/worm baits could one use for Carp?

Earthworm/Kariba worms/Snake worms all work for catching carp. It depends also on the venue. But chances of getting picked up by other species(barbel, kurper) is always a possibility. Use a hook with extra barbs (called a bait carrier hook I think?). You can either hook the work from the mantle all the way down the body, or string it up like like a sosatie (one worm or a whole bunch).

Other insect that I heard work are maggots and snails.

I dont think that you should try and target carp with worms. They do pick them up, but they are mainly herbivores and get meaty food in through targeting vegetation, ie. snails, mussels and other waterlife. I would suggest that you focus on baits like dough, floaties, mealies and backings. Or if its specimen your after then obviously you would look at boilies, particles and bigger plant-based baits.
Like Naruto said, you can rather expect to pick up barbel and where ever kurper are stocked. You can often also catch muddies.
PS, garden snails DO work well. That slime is an excellent carrier for red powder.

Could u fish a worm on the bottom hook and dough on the top of ritvlei rig? Or would you fish worms only on a rig.

Would one cast near/shallow or far/deep when fishing worms?

Ek gebruik gewoonlik 'n erdwurm (as ek hulle gebruik) met 'n SWD as backing of 'n floatie. Hang af waar ek agter gekom het hulle byt. Ek gebruik selde 'n erdwurm alleen op 'n hoek tensy ek Kurpers target. As ek vir Karp gaan en ek begin Kurpers vang gebruik ek nie meer die wurms nie want hulle swem in skole en gaan jou dus begin pla, tensy dit mooi Kurpers is dan target ek weer hulle en los die SWD. Wurms kom goed deur na reën en met die gepaard gaande vuil water waar ek hulle dan met rooi fluoro gebruik. Erdwurms gaan altyd saam met my water toe.

You could work it that way around yes. What I do is if I'm using a rietvlei, then i fish the worm on the bottom hook with a swd on the line (i thread the worm from the saddle and up the line, without zig-zagging. That way the worm doernt break into pieces and remains on the hook longer). I will use a swd on the top hook or with a floatie. Depends. On the vaaldam/bottom rig i have no preference where i place the worm. Sometimes i put worms on both the hooks, one with a swd backing. I do not use worms that often anymore coz it takes time to rig and i get the same tempo/amount of fish with dough. There will be days that you would kick your arse that you didnt pack the worms.
Regarding the distance issue, there are no set rules either. You will pick up muddies, carp and barbel at shorter distances and futher out.

Gewoonlik haak ek op die een stok aan die onder kant 'n trossie wurms en op die boonste hoek slegs een wurm met 'n floatie.(Jy kan die wurms in The Original se Bloedrooi poeier skud)

Op die ander stok sal ek degies en floaties/mielies probeer en kyk waarop hulle byt.

As hulle op wurms byt verander ek 3 van die 4 hoeke na wurms en as hulle op degies byt verander ek na 3 hoeke degies en een hoek wurm (Jy kan dan steeds 'n baber optel met daai wurm).

Tried the wormms today at erina spa - vaal river - didnt work.

The only thing that did work was brown bread and fx.

Bites no hookups...

Hi Guys!

Carp absolutely LOVE worms, but in certain waters they dont seem to remember this!

Kariba worms ( Rhodesian reds ) vs Big garden variety ( bosveldwurms )...

Karibas are very easy to farm at home in a smallish container, the big garden variety prefers compost heaps-but not in  captivity - especially crass cuttings , mixed with some "chalk" ( landboukalk ) and then sprayed wet with a hose.

Karibas are tougher than the big garden variety , they dont drown easily,they can also withstand extreme temperatures, either hot or cold.

Karibas also secrete a yellowish fluid that smells bad ( to us not carp ) when hooked, thus improving bait smell!

But both types work fine,at certain waters...

Jericho dam - Clean bunch of Karibas ( 3-5 worms ) on a 9555 hook, especially at night

Westoe dam - The big garden variety with a pea sized ball of brown bread,mixed with ALLGOLD TOMATO SAUCE and dipped in ALLGOLD TOMATO SAUCE

Belfast dam - Bunch of karibas with a mieliepip on barb of hook,dipped in 007, or MELLOW YELLOW

Pvt dams near Barberton - "Hamburger" ( pea sized ball of brown bread on hook eye,The big garden variety worms on shank and hook barb covered with a single mieliepip, all dipped in VAALDAM or BEETROOT SAUCE ( the sauce from the beetroot you get in boxes at the Spar , grated or sliced )

Braam Raubenheimer / Kwena dam - Stalking schools of carp in the shallows, they are always there, you just have to know where to look... Bunch of the big garden variety on a single hook,no bomb or weight...

These above combos have caught me more carp at these venues than any floatie,mielie or dough combined! So they do work,but at certain dams!

What size hooks did you use and what trace did you use? How was your presentation of the brown bread?

You should try and make a sweet white dough. it might be that the hook was not proud when you placed the bread ontothe hook. One thing is certain, you deserve the congretionalmedal of honour to go and fish in this cold.

Fished Erina last year, didn't get one Carp, got one good muddy and the guys hooked lots of yellow's with spinners.

Hier is vir julle 'n lekker tip om erdwurms vinnig en maklik uit jou grasperk te kry as jy wil gaan hengel.

Gooi net warm water met Sunlight liquid in op 'n kol op jou grasperk uit en sien hoe klim daai manne uit jou gras om van die seep water af weg te kom. Gooi maar lekker baie water. Spoel nou net jou wurms met skoon water af voor jy dit in jou houertjie met grond gooi. Werk soos 'n bom en as dit nie werk nie IS DAAR NIE ERDWURMS NIE.

O ja nog 'n baie goeie tip. As jy met erdwurms teel gooi groen fluoro vir jou erdwurms uit so paar dae voor jy gaan hengel en die erdwurms kry dan so groen binneste en as hulle stukkend raak kry jy daai groen fluoro efek ook in die water. Nie so duidelik soos skoon fluoro nie maar dis wel daar. Jy sal veral Kurpers moor met daai erdtjies.

Karibas is steeds die makliste om mee te boer en dus te "oes"...

Vat 2 lee blompotte, die bruin plastieksoort werk goed

Sit die water bakkie wat saam met die potte verkoop word onder aan die een en vul met water ( dit moet altyd vol gehou word en die redes is A- dit hou miere uit en B- dit hou altyd die grond klam en vogtig )

Vul die een pot so 80% met lekker ryk kompos tipe grond

Sit nou die pot met die grond in die water bakkie

Gaan na Sollys en koop 1 polysterine bakkie kariba wurms

Gooi hulle in die pot met die grond

Sit 'n halwe avokado aof papaya ( ek verkies die paw-paws...) met die oopgesnyde kant op die grond oppv neer

Neem nou die ander pot ( wat nog leeg is ) en sit dit onderstebo bo-op die ander bak neer

VOILA! jou eie DIY wurm plaas

Sit elke week nog papaya by...

Om die wurms te oes,lig net eenvoudig die "deksel" en dop die papaya om...kies die grootstes uit en los die kleintjies
