Hi all

I would appreciate opinions on rod choice. I am thinking of changing my setup and am leaning towards the Daiwa Emcast 12 foot 3.5lb.

I have searched for reviews on the net but info is limited. Please assist with info on the Daiwa,s or alternatives in same price range.

I also have 2 Sensation 12.6 DC Ovals for sale in good condition at R1000 per rod.

If you can for a couple of hundred more look at the Daiwa Mission X. Call Ganis (zero13 69two 7199) as their prices are best and they deliver.

I've had a look at the Emcast and they seem decent, the Mission X I believe might be a better choice. Unfortunately we don't have a lot of choice in SA. Pure Fishing is the distro for JRC and Greys so with a bit of luck we might get some Greys or Chubs in SA soon.

It seems the Daiwa Emcast or Mission X would be good choices.

Now just to sell the DC,s. Any takers?

Not sure how much the Mission X rods sell for, so this may be in a different ball park, but the Sonik SK3 rods are awesome and underrated in my view. Worth a look I'd say...

The Sonik is definitely a better rod but easily double the price and not available in SA

TT used to sell them for around R2,4k if I remember correctly, not sure if he still does? If the Mission X rods are in the R1 - 1,5k bracket, it may be worth having a look at the Shimano Vengeance rods.

TT don't import anything anymore. Mission X is under R1000, Vengeance is around R800.

Is TT still in business? It's a shame that you hear guys complaining a lot that there's no decent gear and bait available locally, but then when someone tries to serve the market they go under due to lack of support.

Anyway, LanceR sorry to hijack your topic, good luck with the rod shopping, it can be a lot of fun. My advice is try as many different models in your price range as possible before you buy, what works for one guy doesn't necessarily work for the next.

The problem is the Rand has gone to $hit so importing stuff is almost a no-go because there is basically no profit to be made, that or people simply don't buy quality gear because it's deemed to expensive.

You got a point there, didn't think of it. Being outside SA it's a bonus for me when the Rand takes a dive, so I don't always see things from that angle.

I don't think it's entirely a 'lack of support' that local tackle shops go under - Let's face it alot of people and anglers are not exempt are cash strapped

Secondly 'most anglers can't see the wood from the trees when it comes to quality anyway - that said we talking about buying tackle and thirdly the Rand is K@K anyway you look at it .......

I also think the tackle suppliers lean more towards catering for the bigger market, which is conventional style angling.

Although over the past few years specimen angling has shown good growth it remains an expensive form of the sport and many anglers would like to convert but cannot due to budget constraints . There are cheaper local products on the market but not always up to the imported goods standard.

All valid points, no doubt. I don't think specimen carp angling needs to be all that expensive. Anglers tend to get caught up in the trap of forever upgrading equipment, but how much difference it really makes is debatable.

When I was a teenager (read: zero cash) I used to fish for carp with a little 6ft okuma rod & reel combo, mono included in the combo. I have fond memories of stalking carp with bread flake and catching them off the surface, literally 10m from me. The biggest carp I ever took in that way was a 23lb fish that was my PB carp for many, many years and to this day I can remember that capture like it was yesterday. At that time, for better or worse, I had never read any angling magazine and the internet didn't exist, so there was no fishing forums. Catching a 23lb carp I believed I must be one of the best carp anglers ever ha ha!

The point is it's as complicated or simple, as cheap or expensive, as you make it. My last specimen set-up was a set of Nash Pursuit rods, lovely to fish with and I have no regrets having bought it, but I'm under no illusions that I could have been just as successful with a set of the cheapest Okuma rods in Sportsmans Warehouse.

Expensive gear doesn't catch fish. Watercraft, practise and persistence does.

Eugene you are 100% corrsct in saying guys get caught up in the hype. I think a lot of guys watch youtube vids or whatever and are indoctrinated into buying gear they absolutely don't need. Problem is that in trying to help guys starting out they are very defensive and you can't tell them anything and they end up learning the hard expensive way. I think most of us have been in the same boat.

Agree with EC ... I've seen alot of anglers over the years come and go in Specimen fishing some with the best of gear - others buy it all and don't fish that much to gain full benefit - I guess due to circumstances.

When we started Specimen in SA some 20yrs or so ago we didn't have too much available but made the most of the 'cheap rods' we had compared to today - IM 6's & 7's but hell I wasn't gonna fish cheap alarms - Fox Micron's still going strong.
