Hi all

I thought of opening this section as a "Guideline" to fellow fishermen. I have had the occasional pm where new members ask assistance on which areas fall under the "No Go" fishing zones due to safety.

Maybe Ryan can do a sticky on this topic for us so that it stays ontop (just a thought).

To often we hear of people being attacked, robbed and murdered at fishing spots these days and it's really sickening to think that you get targeted just for enjoying your sport / hobby.

I personally have not had any run in with crime since i moved down to Pretoria about 5 years back, however i do regulary fish a private spot which most of you has probally heard about on the forums - "The Waterkloof Quarry". I am not going to call this venue safe but thank God i have not had problems there yet. There are numerous stories going around about this place being a safety risk area but as to date i cannot supply a clear answer to this possibillity. I have learnt that "attackers" will leave you at peace today while the same "attackers" will try and corner you tomorrow. Who knows maybe in time i will pay the price for taking the risk of fishing there.

The input of other members to assist us all will be greatly appreciated. I would hate to read that someone from this "site" were killed during fishing while we all could have helped just by giving our comments.

I know that Johanvc were attacked at a quarry in Midrand. Not to sure where it is but maybe he could give us info on that.

Few weeks back someone was almost attacked at... forgot the name, but he escaped by jumping the fence and running like hell.

Any info to help each other will be great.

Please remember that your hobby ain't worth your life.

Regards

Jacques

Murray Park Springs, as well as the four other dams bordering around it(Presidents dam). I was the guy who jumped the fence and ran like hell! lol. I fish these spots with a few friends. One of them was mugged at gunpoint last year and shot in the leg. A father and son were both shot earlier this year on the other side of the Murray Park resort. And my Girlfriends uncle was held at gunpoint, hands and feet tied, and thrown in the dam. He is a big guy, they must have been scared. He broke the ropes off his wrist and swam out. They took his car.

And another warning would be Homestead dam, although safer than Murrays, just be warned there have been MANY incidents there as well. Fish in groups here.

Well guys about two years ago myself and a friend was mugged at the Samrand quarry. Now when the cops got there they said they get called out about 8 times a week to this spot for the same reason. So be warned. In the last year I have heard of many people going there and being robbed.
I was told there are big fish and believe me I saw loads of fish way over 4kg’s swimming around there the day we got there. This place makes bass lake look like a kindergarten. We did not even have time to make a cast when the 4 guys pitched up. So yes there are big fish because No body gets a chance to fish there.
Don’t think you can go in a group all armed and nothing will happen. These guys are one step ahead every time. The bigger your group the bigger their group and the more aggressive they are

So again be warned

Morning All!

There's a spot near the old riverside mixer where the river dams up a little. 2-3kg fish there, but once again, just keep your eyes pealed and your tackle close. No serious incidents, just 3 chaps from Mammelodi that was a bit too inquisitive.

Great thread guys - as Ajayrahj said - pity we need to discuss this.
Would the guys on the coast also update this thread?

Great idea. Just another suggestion to beef it up. Can this topic we broken up into categories, like provinces then maybe dam, rivers, sea spots. So for example if i'm going to a province, I can look at that province and eg. sea spots and get a good idea or feeling of the area. This way I do not need to read all.

Reading through everyones comments on the whole dangers of fishing certian places has only one answer guys, Fish private venues  where you have to pay. Big dams like bronkies and vaal and some sections of the vaal river are fine but when it comes to our local little dams like Homestead, Whitfield and any of the quarry's stay clear from them because as much as you say fish in groups and make sure you got big guys with you, no one can stop an AK47 bullet.

Its very sad that this country has gone like this and now it is even worse with all the job losses and the country in finacial problems.

In all honesty its not a bad thing to die doing the thing you love most in the world but its true that the sport is not worth your life!

I would say stay totally clear of Ruimsig dam, [glow=darkred]Primrose Quarry[/glow], Germiston Lake, Whitfield Dam,

Just watch out when using a float tube because they wait for you to get to side and while trying to get out they attack because you are basically busy trying to get out, always look around you and climb out by an open area and no where near trees or reeds. Just my 2C.

Morning gents

I had to do a few things close to waterkloof quarry over the weekend and decided to go check on the qaurry as mentioned.

Since the last time i've been there it seems that the population of illigal immagrants that live there has grown. I had my hands full getting close to the water and almost ended up getting stuck in the mud doing so, the water level was very high some time back and due to this some of the water on the path has not cleared up since.

On my way out i almost got stuck again and i had to stop next to the path to clear my windsreen from all the mud, i turned around and there were 5 blokes standing right there in the nearby bush as if they were waiting for me to get stuck. Being a very edgy person that i am and already being irritated with the mud on my windscreen i walked a few meters closer and asked the guy in the front what the hell he wanted and what he was waiting for, he looked back at me and replied "what do you think we are waitng for"?

What happened after that i won't tell.

As the population there grows safety would become more of an issue.

It really is a sad state when one can't even fish in safety anymore!!!

I've fished Ruimsig a few times and never had any issues, always wondered though cause there are a lot of random people that walk past the whole time.

Has anyone had any issues there?
