Hello RB

Lure was a Duel Tamentai 60gr spoon in green colour. An odd spoon I know. It is normally a jig. I saw it when I was at Mias and thought it would work as a spoon. Was lucky to get one on a half price sale they had. This fish destroyed the lure with the result that I am trying to source a few more. Was the third cast with this spoon. Was previously using the Ashley Read S-Flat. There was a fresh SE blowing with the result that I had to use a smaller spoon that was easier to cast in the wind. Also the reason for fishing the smaller reel with lighter braid. Normally fish Saragosa 6000 on this rod but the smaller reel with thinner braid allows one to cast better and keep the lure near the bottom easier. The thicker braid gets caught by the wind more and as a result it is more difficult to fish the spoon where you want.

Anton

Gotta agree with Rob here! Would love to see what type of lure was used and what the retrieval speed was. Still wanna try the lure experience!

Hello Guys

Thank you very much for all of the kind words. The truth is that for anyone to land a fish such as this there are a few things that need to go your way. The things that helped me were:
  • The fish took the lure 40m from the side thus giving me quite a bit more line capacity. I saw the fish eat the lure.[/*]
  • The fish moved right down the beach. Had he gone left through the river mouth I would have had difficulty staying with him. [/*]
  • I hooked the fish perfectly on the scissors. Had I hooked him in a hard part of the jaw, I would should have pulled the treble hook open[/*]
  • I got him over the lip onto a big flat bank. Had I got him near to the beach but in a trough/gully I would never have been able to land him on my own. I used the waves to slowly wash him nearer to me.[/*]
  • My flouro leader was only 20cm and 20lbs. How I did not get cut off on the gill plate I will never know. You could see the marks from the braid on the side of its head. My leader only got a few cm past his eye.[/*]
The worst thing about seeing a fish so early in the fight is that I new the tackle that I had and at no point did I think that I could land the fish on that tackle.

The fish was donated to Vermont Old Age home in Knysna. They were incredibly grateful for the gift.

I had to drag the fish in the water back to the car park at Swartvlei. The worst part about it was that I was wearing a pair of long, golf rainsuit pants that made walking in the water a nightmare. They have filled up with water so it was like dragging two balloons with you. I had to get two surfers to help me carry the fish up to my bakkie.

It was a great moment for me to be able to land such a fish but extremely sad to see the fish die. I landed one a few years ago on coventional tackle that measured 1660mm that I was successfully able to release. This fish was too far gone. When I landed it I was able to walk the last 15m to the fish in the shallows without it even trying to move.

I am convinced that reasonable tackle played a big role in me landing this fish. I have upgraded the washers in this reel to Carbontex - thank you Darius. This allowed to put the pressure on that I needed without the worry of the drag sticking. I still spent much of hte fight chest deep in the water trying not to get spooled but also to get my braid clear of the beach. With a shorter rod you dont have the clearance you do with a longer rod. I was scared of the braid being burned off if it was lying over the bank.

I was extremely blessed to land this fish and I can only hope to experience it again in my angling life.

Regards

Anton
