Floatie and dough. On a 0.8 daiichi hook it stands up quite nicely in the water, right in the fish's eyesight. You can also put more than 1 floatie with or without dough.

Great Post!

Many anglers get taken for a ride when they walk into a tackle shop and see the bewildering range of choices available. The salesman then sells him stuff that isn't really neccesary or beyond his original budget.

Many a big fish has been landed on a Hyperama special rod with a Shakespear reel.

Just like golf, the best equipment cannot magically transform your game without knowing the basics.

Dis n feit Tokolos!

Baie dips staan ook net in my kas, miskien eenkeer in 3 jaar gebruik. Gaan vir my 'n klein battle box aanskaf en back to basics.

Ek het by my pa geleer van groot van der merwes en bruinbrood. Stap eendag by 'n hengel - winkel in en skrik my morsdood vir alles.

:fst::fst:

@BRAKKANJAN: ekt presies dieselfde idee as jy.

Dalk moet ek net een Saterdag oggend a halwe bottel Capt.

That's excellent! Who said anglers aren't poets too?

I have a better idea...

I'll get my better half to drink a bottle of Capt Morgan, take her to the tackle shop, and SHE can buy me the Shimano's.::S

Hey Naruto

I just posted something regarding my first fishing experience...

http://www.sealine.co.za/view_topic.php?id=35926&forum_id=79

In my post, I requested some further assistance, but manged to stumble upon your post, which I'm really excited about!!!

This is an awesome post, even though some of the fishing jargon goes way over my head, I'm sure I'll pick up soon enough. There are so many questions buzzing around in my head, which could take up too much space. Could you please point me to some good research facilities ie, books, mags, websites? I'd really appreciate it...

Thanks and good fishing...

Regards JDB

Welcome to Sealine Jay.
If you wish to read up on freshwater angling, you could buy an SA mag called the Bank Angler. A quality gloss mag that covers conventional bank angling, specimen carp angling and pole angling. You could also go to Eddie Sheppard's website at http://fisheagle.homestead.com. He is a Protea bank angler with tips and pointers on what you need to know.
You will however find everything you need right here on Sealine. Next question?

So here's one of my questions.

As you know I just started out. It's all a bit daunting, researching and knowing what's exactly relevant to my situation right now.

I get the sense that there's just so much more to it than just randomly choosing a float and just casting out, hoping to catch something.
As a beginner what should I be thinking about? More accurately, what should I be concentrating on? What makes an angler better?

Thanks and all the best

JDB/JayXdee

what makes an angler better, is what you are doing, asking for help broading your horizions and always listenings, never go home after a session without learning something, and always take only picture and leave only footprints ;) perhaps try hook up a session with one of the sealiners to learn more ;)
