M, I do not know when my next session is, but I would like to have it ASAP. Just got a girlfriend though so I don't really want to spend every weekend away, if you know what I mean!!

longtime, keep asking questions, they arent stupid at all...

About the girlfriend and fishing, it is a good idea not to go every weekend... she might not fancy that too much, hahaha... and giving yourself at least a weekend inbetween your sessions keeps one keen to go again, and gives you time to get some more odds and bits, info etc...

Spod, catch any barbel lately?

hey ltnf, i've been away from my pc for a while, so only saw this thread now. these guys have really given you some sterling advice, so you're in good hands here man!

remember when buying tackle for specimen angling, it's like the visa card add...rod: R1000, reel: R800 etc. etc. etc. and at the end of the day all you really get to keep is a couple of pics of some fish that are bigger than you can even begin to imagine, but that really is priceless!
you've made a good choice going for specimen style angling, you'll see soon enough!

Havent really been out for a while, waiting for the winter.
How about you? did you go to secret dam? and?

PC... wondered where you were, yip, specimen is hard on the pocket, but oh so worth it in the end.... even if its just pics...lol! the experience that goes with those pics will live forever as you remenise when you look at them, strange that, you remember everything about that particular catch... and each and every one.lol priceless!

Tjooona... oh well he's still got a hand line in there somewhere....hehehehe! cheap skate...whaa hahahahaa!

LTNF, the only stupid question is the one you dont ask, dont worry about that, through your questions, you learn and we learn....hehehehe!

Lol Spod, well guess what, I caught a barbel myself this weekend, hahahahaa!!!! one of only 2 fish I got for a WEEKEND!!!! that is just UNACCEPTABLE, LOL!!!!!!

Hi LTNF, in response to your question about the okuma reels...i must admit my experience with okuma tackle is limited, but i have made a couple of casts with okuma rods & reels and that basis i will say the following:

if you are asking this question because you are thinking of buying one (or more) of these reels, i would advise you not to do so. look, there's essentially nothing wrong with an okuma reel, it will get the bait out in the water, it will get your line in from the water, you can catch fish with it, no doubt about it.
but the simple difference comes in when one day you're out with a friend and he lets you make a single cast with his beautiful shimano or similar quality reel and, trust me my friend, you will not rest until you have replaced your okuma's!!

there is really just no comparison, i wouldn't argue that you can't catch big fish with okuma tackle, afterall, spod has awesome tackle and he only catches barbel! :fbash
(sorry spod, couldn't resist:), only joking!) the thing is just that you will get a lot more satisfaction out of fishing with decent quality tackle that you can have complete confidence in without having to first find out wether it actually can or can not handle that 20kg carp! okuma reels are just not the same quality as shimano etc. and does not cast as smoothly, doesn't have drags that are as smooth and the list goes on. if you only fish with okuma, you won't even know the difference, but like is said...one day you will pick up your friends shimano (or similar, guys i'm not trying to start a war here!) and you will suddenly understand why serious fishermen prefer brands other than okuma.

Ok....In that case I will save up a bit more and definately buy SHIMANO!!!! Don't know okuma at all, therefor the question!!

Lost a fish of a lifetime on travetines. Gear seized up and line snapped, boought 3 gte's the next day and havent had a bit of trouble.

LTNF Iwould suggest you buy a good front drag reel from Daiwa. line capasity is great and the reels are quality. Dont let anybody tell you, you have to have baitrunners.

im fishing with 10000's and they just dont work on big waters. Now I have to splash out another lot of money just to fish bigger waters.

Maybe try and arrange a trip with one of the specimen guys and see what tackle they have and why they have it. You will get a better picture like that.

Is a front drag reel not a normal coffee grinder type??

What do you mean by fishing big waters?

LTNF Why don't you organise a trip to rietvlei? There are some monster carp. Make sure you go with someone who knows the place.

Might be a good idea to try a dam with easier fishing first, to get some experience with the new tackle, and some fish to build up your confidence with the new style. (E.g Harties, Vaaldam even, Donaldson bottom dam, etc.)
Rietvlei has killed many a new specimen carp angler's enthusiasm, its more on a moderate to difficult scale..... Just my opinion...:SSS

Im very busy with work at the moment, but if you can wait until beginning march I can take you to Leisure Lakes for a weekend session. Then you will be able to see why you need what tackle for wjatever reason.I got Spod and his son hooked on specimen there.

If you cant wait that long, try and go past rietvlei and have a chat to one of the specimen guys(The guys dressed as trees).Just dont ask them what area they are fishing and what bait they are using. Ask questions more relevant to tackle ie. bobbins, alarms, safety clips, hooklink materials for different presentations, spodding, plumbimg, mainlines ect.

Reply to your question about big water.
When we use the term big waters we refer to places like buffelspoort, klaserie, fanie botha, boegoeberg and basically any water that wont fit in your local parkie. These waters you more often than not have to fish at extreme ranges (400m+)A shimano 10000/okuma travetine 55 can hold approx 400m of .30 line. A big pit / daiwa front drag can hold approx 700m of .30 depending on the make and model. Dont try and fish 400m with a 10000 maxed out. The retrieval rate is much better on a big diameter spool.

I can wait till March...But I am pretty sure that I will not have any of the tackle by then seeing as it is so expensive...Is that still ok then??

Where is leisure lakes???

Is the front drag reel a coffee grinder type?

ive got two setups so you dont need to bring any tackle. The main thing I want to show you the weekend is what items of tackle you cant skimp on. After the session you will be able to make the correct decision when procuring your tackle.
