Duane, i'll be honest, the Sensation Pva is no good. I've had some and a number of guys have come back with the same problem. The pva mesh is very weak and if you can cast it without the bag ripping, the pva dissolved way too fast.

Thing is, I would say pva bags/mesh is specifically for certain scenarios. If you take your hookbaits out with a boat and drop your lines, then I dont see the benefit of using pva bags/mesh, as you can feed by hand over your hookbait when dropping it.

Pva bagging is best for example, if you for example fish in or near weed, or to prevent your rig from tangling on the cast... or in colder months when the carp are not very hungry, and a small heap of food from a pva will be sucked up easily... or if you already have feed in your swim, and you'd like to cast out and have a small helping of freebies right there with your hookbait...
Just my opinion on it, lol...

i agree, sensation pva is not the greatest! also, like mc said, pva is for fairly specialised techniques, if you're just chucking it out randomly on every other cast you might as well be putting R10 notes on your hair rig 'cos you're just wasting money!

for general baiting up purposes there are much more effective (and far cheaper) methods, like spodding or bait catapults to name only two.

Oh, thats not so bad.
What I do at the moment is mix some kaboom mielies and/or boilies in my feed and put it on my sliding weight. Is the PVA more effective than what Im doing at the moment? If yes, for what reason?

Okay we take in our lines every time so its not realy necesary to buy pva if we can just feed by hand or put some on the sinker?

Guys.. the pva mesh is a specialized product, and yes, the sensation type is crap. sorry but its true, fox is far better, and the price, well... fox..lol
It's not like Im using it every 5mins, I like to spod!!! lol! if I cant use a boat. But as mentioned there are specific times when I use mesh, particularly on hooklinks.
What I was trying to tell Longtime, is to put a few freebees in a bag and cast them out, seeing he didnt prefeed the spot. I also assumed he didnt have a spod or caterpult.... But if he had access to a boat of sort, to drop some freebee's with his line.... better than just hookbait in a vast expanse of water.

Pva's is a total diverse subject on its own and books can be written about it and it's uses...lol

KFG, what you are doing will work fine.

Hey guys...

Was at harties since friday, caught 22 carp, biggest one was 1kg smallest about 500gr! A bit dissappointing although it is better than nothing!

I tried the boilies on my brothers rods on friday night seeing as he had to leave at 6am on saturday for work, put it in at 23:00 on friday night and left it until 15:00 saturday afternoon, and absolutely NOTHING happened!

I reckon that I should visit another dam next time!

Hehe you have to feed the spot with some boilies at first, I think you would have had more success using a hair-rig with 4-6 maize pips instead of a boilie as the fish would have been more used to it.

Proper feeding should be a very important part of your fishing trip, when you are targeting specimen fish.

Yes I know, but by the time I realised that there is a better way than "old school fishing" and posted the topic, it was already too late to get prepared for specimen before the weekend...I actually put them in through the night not to get stuffed around by the little ones, and knowing that if I had a run, it would have been worth waking up for!!

But, now that the little ones irritated me enough I will definately be more prepared next time!!

Ja I think you had gone by the time we posted some advice, pity, but at least you enjoyed yourself, I mean getting back into the tempo lol!

Ive managed to pull fish in harties near ifafi with boillies, just needs a diff approach thats all, Like I said before, you need to make a mouse trap when fishing there.
Maize on the hair would have worked too, but I like to also mouse trap them, about a cup full of particles dropped with your hookbait...

But Im sure you will have enough time to figure the system out before your next session and be more prepared.

Glad to hear you got your fair share of fish on your trip! Pity about the bigger carp keeping themselves scarce. But yeah, as you get back into the swing of things and start getting out to the waters more regularly your fish quality will improve I am sure.
Do yourself a favor though, look into a session at Rushmere, you won't be sorry!

Thanx guys...

I will definately post another topic long before I go the next time!! I wil however not go to ifafi again as they put a cable in 120m out to keep the boats and jetski's n stuff out, so you can't really go deeper than that!

I would love to pull out some bigger carp again!! I just need to find the right dam.

D, I was on the site of the rushmere dam, and they have extremely strict rules! No lights at night, no centre pins, ( and I just LOVE mine), only size 3 and 4 hooks allowed, no lead line under 15lb...stuff like that, and that sounds like they make it an uncomfortable event to go there, I might be wrong though!

Maybe I should just go with one of you guys next time, so I can learn first hand?

Yeah, thats why I said casting a boilie out into nowhere doesnt really work so good, hahaha... But sorry longtime, its never nice when you dont catch your target size...

Next time, take about 1kg minimum of the flavour boilies you intend to use. Only use one flavour, and in my opinion, go onto http://www.outdoorpages.co.za and if you can access their gallery, you can look at carp captures by species for the last few years. when the list is loaded, use the "Find" function, type in "Hartebeespoort" and go down the list, see what baits & flavours works there... and choose one of them for your next trip.

But Tjoona is also spot on there with the suggestion to use a few maize pips on the hair rig. I have used this approach at Ifafi over 3 sessions and caught plenty carp, smallest 5kg and biggest was a tad over 10kg...After all the years, they still love maize... plain that is...

best is to start specimen carp fishing with particles... maize is the cheapest, but also get some tigernuts. its abit expensive, but you only need maybe 500g to 1kg for a weekend... some to mix into your groundbait, and a few to put on your hair rigs... (Just remember, soak it for 24-36hrs, then boil it for 20-30mins...soak maize for 24-48 hrs and boil at least 30mins, until you see some of the maize pips starting to split open... pour the lot into a container and seal it till the morning...)

You dont have to go to another venue, just approach your session the correct way next time, and I'm sure you will get bigger fish at Harties... with the mass netting of fish going on there at the moment, the catches are becoming better, size-wise...

So do I take this container of boiled particles and use it as ground bait??

Tiger nuts, how many on a hook, do they float, how do they work?

What does a hair rig look like?

Google is your best friend, typing "hair-rig - picture" or "making a hair-rig" would definitely give some result on what a hair-rig looks like!

Tigernuts do not float, to get a tigernut to float you need to critically balance it, also easy to find on the web!

Hey LTNF.. Tjoona is totally correct there but to short circuit the search, check out the other threads here, especially "competition carp angling - Specimen". I admit I read the thread wrong and thought it was only specimen, thus most of the info is specimen related. Momo330 also posted a lot of pics that will shed a lot of light for you, rigs and leaders and leads....

so check them out and then lets see how the guys answer your other questions.
