Please dont put anything tar related on your dog, use the Advantage but to stop them scratching themselves get some Curatex from your vet, it soothes their skin from itchiness. I learnt these tricks from having a bulldog, they have endless skin problems...hope your dogs get better.

This is a very common problem with JRs, we have tried all sorts of things. Advantage works but you have to treat the skin while the advantage is working, the best thing we have found is a product called Stop itch, you can get it from most horse shops, but I know Assagay Feeds in Shongweni stocks it. Do not use cattle dip on them especially if the skin is raw, it will burn them. Having said that there are dips that can be used on dogs and cattle, you must be very careful which one you use, but only when the skin has healed. As a matter of interest, never use frontline on Min Pins, it burnes their skins because it is so thin and sensitive.

You don't have to use funny stuff on the Jacks. We had 6 now only 5 but  I've got the answer for you. PM coming.

For fleas use Capstar tablets, get the tablets for large dogs and break it in half. It works out cheaper, is much better than any shampoo or dip on the market. It kill all fleas on the dog within 10 min. Repeat this every 5 days until all the eggs have hatched and the dog is flea free.

If the dog develops excima like symptoms thats when the dog has bald patches or parts of its body where hair has not grown and its constently itchy. This is due to a skin mite that has burrowed just below the skin and feeds.

With this its very simple to treat and very cheap. Go to your local pharmacy and ask them for sulpher cream. It comes in about 50 ml round containers. Run this into the affected area 2 times a day (Morning and evening). This kills the mite and hair growth will soon start.

Cheers i hope this helps.

For all you dog lovers remember not to feed your animals raisens, onions and chocolate. Its extremely toxic for your dogs and can cause organ failure

Yes you are right it is a mite, we had a biopsy done on our jack and the vet said it is mites, what he found interesting is that they are mites that are usually found on pigs. The sulpher cream does work but it pongs a bit.

What the advice here is missing, and many vets too, is the fact that Jack Russell's are highly allergic animals - the allergies always exhibiting symptoms in the skin, with rashes and 'mad-brak' scratching. Jack Russell's are generally allergic to CHICKEN. Feed your JR with chicken or any by-products and you're guaranteed to have itchy skin and rashes. A point to note is that most of the cheaper Dogfoods are all chicken based!!?! What worked for my dogs, according to advice from our Vet, is NO CHICKEN whatsoever - make sure you know the contents of the dogbiscuits you use. Even the more expensive Eukanuba food has chicken base. There is a particular food recommended for all allergic skin reactions and that it HILLS. It is expensive, but has has made a major difference in my dog's health. Use it or don't.

Hi guys, I have a Jack Russel, Sausage Dog, and two Lab's.
The dip that you are looking for is called DAZZLE. Any co-op should have it. I use Dazzle once a month to dip the dogs. It keeps the Tick's and Flea's off them and out of the property. Whatever is left after dipping all the dogs, I pour all along the walls of the garden. This has worked for me for the last 8 years. Once a week you can add 1 tablespoon of cooking oil to the dogs food. All my dogs have a shiny skin and have never had any itches.

JJ Bev's Parlour on the Bluff charges me R30 for dip/wash & toe nail trim (for my JR that is) . Frontline sorted my JR out BUT we had to spray/treat the areas of the yard he frequents & obviously his kennel. We went to the extreme of treating the inside of the house even tho his not allowed in the house.

Reefman you 100% right regarding Hill's. I tried changing my JR to Purina due costs ( more like the wife enving the dog) & his coat went to tatters put him back on Hill's & voila ! Awesome product & well worth the money.
