Sensitivity on alarms is not critical, but it does give you a better indication of what is happening on the other end of your line.

Hey MC, I bought the R499 specials that Western sell in a set along with the swingers. Man these things were so cheap that they weren't even branded...lol::hapi:
But, I'll be honest, I will be buying a more durable set when I return for good as I am pretty sure that the ones I have wont last long when I start fishing regularly.  I'll use the ones I have until they eventually die just as a matter of interest though.

Ignoring the last post, I would venture to say that cheap ones will work ok, if as said you angle occassionally, but when it comes to frequent angling, then they wont last. Yes, they may work after a rain fall, but they begin to rust and corrosion appears on the pc boards and the ic, shorts out. Then the buzzer sounds sick, also the roller rubber o ring perishes and your line slips over it with out sensing. The button too as stated, are another problem, they fall out/off and when you pack up, they cant be found... missing in action. just a few points.

I think the Gilfox ones MC is using is real value for money and would suggest them, not badly priced too... for 4 alarms and remote.

Hey guys sory for changing the subject but im just interested. What is the most or largest bait you have ever used on a hair rig?

Last time the smaller fish were realy bugging me so, hoping I will scare the little fish away, lol, I put on THREE KABOOM MIELES!!! And still a 2kg carp picked it up!

And it wasnt small kaboom mielies. The bait was almost as big as its head...okay maybe not that big but still it was a big chunk of food.

Kg. Look at the fish's mouth when open, that small carp has quite a large mouth for its size. ive seen guys use 35-40mm boillies before, not uncommon, depends where they angling. small fish are a problem, sometimes lol. uping the size of bait does help, but particles are small, try more maize on the hair, ive used upto 7 already and ballanced, thats a long string. small fish also just get the bait and not the hook sometimes and run with it, usually not far though, and drop it. so on the bank you get a nice little run. For this reason, I dont pick my rod up immediately. Although such runs cause me to retrieve my line and reposition itanyway.(if its moved off my spot for any reason, ill bring it in and redrop it. the hook may have fowled something, or the bait may be off, or the rig could be tangled) Im not gonna sit there waiting on a dead hook. Also one of the reasns I drop my lines and not cast.

Hey Pc, no, I go out with a boat, bait boats i dont like either..with the boat I get my line exactly where I want it, no need for pva bags like casting or bait boats. I check the rig on board for tangles and lower gently, and feel it land.if it doesnt land firm, i pull it up and check the rig again and lower again till im happy. our hook baits can afford that, they not like pg where if you drop and retrieve the bait is gone, as you know lol. I just have this fob about the hook being obscured.

ok, thanks for clearing that up spod, i personally hate bait boats, but what you are doing sounds like a great idea. i agree about being sure everything's perfect, you wouldn't want to wait 3 days, get a run and miss the fish 'cos your rig is a mess!

Kingfisher-guy, you can easily use up to 10 kaboems, and most probably you'll get a greedy 8kg sucking it in, lol! Its also got to do with the shape of your bait... 10 Kaboem mielies on the hook/hair would be muc easier for smaller carp to get into their mouths, compared to a 30mm boilie, for example...

For some reason I just never fish with boilies. I dont know if it is coz im new to specimen angling but I realy prefer kaboom mielies over everything and second is tigers.

Maybe its just a sense of mind but until my pal that always fishes with boilies catches a nice fish I dont think Il put it on my hair!

Do you think I must keep giving it a try or do some of you also have a problemo with boilies?

KG, it depends where you angling, but if you have confidence in your particles, go for it, if you look at what particles are you will see that they have been hookbaits for many years, maize, peanuts, hemp, maple, chickpeas, tigernuts to name a few have been around forever and have caught beeg fish. In my opinion, particles are a very under rated bait.(they excellent)
I wouldnt worry too much, if they working for you... cool.
I always have particle hookbait on atleast two of my rods at any given time.

very nice link there spod! kingfisher, to add to what spod has said, i would suggest you give boilies a try, they can be very effective indeed. when i first started out in specimen angling i didn't have much confidence in tigernuts for some reason. but i made up my mind that i will give them a proper go until i catch something decent on them. so i used to bait up with particles and boilies on 3 of my rods and put one rod out with tigernuts (usually in the spot i had the least confidence in lol!) until one day i got picked up by a really nice common that tipped the scales to around 12kg's. since then i wouldn't go anywhere without tigers!
so, assuming you do fish with more than one rod at a time, i'd suggest you try boilies on one of your rods until you have a bit more confidence in them.

spod is absolutely right about the effectiveness of particles, there's no doubt about that. but i also think that to be a well rounded angler that can fish in all conditions it's good to expand your horizons a little and try different baits and approaches, so give boilies a go, they work!
