Hey guys

I see the price for alarms range from R60 - R600!!! What are the benefits of the alarms that are sooo pricy? What ararms do you use?

The cheapies are normally a waste of money when it comes to alarms. I'd say the cheapest one should go, in my opinion, is the Gilfox alarms. They're about R100-R120 last time I checked. But if you want very good quality, then you'll have to pay R300 upwards...

I use a set of 4 Gilfox alarms with remote receiver. Havent had any probs with them.

I use fox micron's and a fox micron txr 433 remote.(most of my tack is fox)
But the remote is because i sleep in my van and cant hear the alarm on the bank, I also dont like other ppl striking my rods, so I turn the volume down on the alarms and only hear the alarm on my remote...hehehe.
Also have a cheapie set of sensations, they work just as good and connect to the remote.(use these at dodgy venues)
Kingfisher guy, very cheap alarms are nasty, they not sensitve enough and some malfunction with rain storms.
The more expensive ones have better sensitivity due to the magnetic roller they use and have more functions like sensitivity for one.

Haha I didnt even know you get alarms! Is it wireless or is there a chord that runs from each alarm? And what is the price for a remote?

KG, there are wires with earphone type pluge that plug into the bottom of the alarms(basically any alarms) and the other end has an AV type plug that plugs into the remote. The Transmitter to reciever is wireless, I tested my fox one to 300m already, but would never be that far from my pod. usually within 30m.
The price... eish man Fox are you sitting down...lol.
between R3000 and R4000 for 4 alarms, transmitter and remote.
But.... there are others on the market like....
those cheapies of MC...lol..whaa haa haaa....
Only jokin MC, silence! I killllll you!

Haha nearly got a heart atack when I saw the price of the fox! So thats definetely out of the question but Il take a look at some shops thanks spod!

BTW do you own the fox set???????

Haha let me know if you wana sell (or give them away) one day!!

Im only starting specimen angling now so I have to get me a pod and some alarms and I definetely dont want to pay more for the alarms than the pod + rods + reels + tent + car etc...lol

But anyways im sure the remote comes in handy on a windy night in a not so quiet tent.

Well I believe the Gilfox alarm set is now more expensive, and the design is newer. Momo330 has/had a set, he might be able to give feedback.
My set consists of 4 alarms and the wireless receiver, and it cost me R1100. And they're still working well, for what its worth here, lol...

i've caught some half decent carp in my time and none of them ever laughed at my alarms, so i reckon i'm doing ok. even if spod would probably have a quiet chuckle to himself if he bumped into me on the bank!

Pappi Choulo...lol... I never look down on anyone my friend, I didnt say I bought them,lol, I got them as a gift and so, I'll use them, but most of the posting there was a dig... at my infidel good friend..hehehehe! and yip he retaliated as expected ...on que....
But seriously, I always say buy what you can afford and feel comfy with, if it works for you, use it.

dito spod..... there is no point spending soo much on tackle but when it comes to the important stuff like bait then you compromise. ill post a pic of the new gilfox alarm set. it just has a new design and the addition of sensitivity settings.

What are the most common problems encountered with the cheaper alarms??? I have only just started using them and bought the cheapest set I could find as they were for my once off session at Rushmere and had no problems. They even survived a storm on day 2 and continued to work as they should. I figured that when the fish bite they are going to run with a speed and engage any alarm you use, hence taking away the necessity for sensitivity in an alarm. Just look at the underwater footage found on YouTube. I'm sure that you are not going to strike on the slightest beep either. This is of coarse my very "inexperienced" opinion on the subject.

the most common problem is when it gets wet from rain, it stops working. The other problem I've had is the buttons falling out....Duane, what make of alarms did you buy?

Sensitivity on alarms is not critical, but it does give you a better indication of what is happening on the other end of your line.

Hopefully the tax man gives me some money back and then Its a set of delkims for me. Haha, wishfull thinking.

The cheapies are fine if you only fish once a year or like spod/md only get a run every second trip. When fishing 3 nights a week the whole year round get yourself proper tackle, the quality will show after about 200nights next to the water.
