Hey folks

Ultra-Light Jigging is proving HUGELY popular in Auz and NZ as well as in the US..... and a few European fanatics are also getting in on this dimension of our sport.

When we start talking of PE1, PE2 and PE3 we are talking very LIGHT!

Nepps has been using the Ultra-light Jigging gear for about 2 years - and he has caught some GREAT fish (and also been SMOOOOoooooooooked a few times as well!!!!).  I thought he was mad.....

Well, until now that is........ Sheeeez, this is good fun - probably because we can use ultra-light metal Jigs AS WELL as intermediate soft plastics (drop-shot) in SHALLOWER water and box with smaller fish (that fight like monsters on ultra-light gear) which is comparible to the bigger fish we catch (actual Monsters on PE6-10 gear that we use by default).

A 5kg Yellowtail on ultra-light is as entertaining, if not more so than a 30kg 'tail on PE6-10!!!!!

Interesting that we have EXPORTED from South Africa more JM Saber 100's to Europe than we have sold in Africa!!!! This is after paying shipping from Jigging Master to South Africa, and then onward Shipping them to Europe!!!!! The logistic costs are obscene - and nearly double the cost of the rod and yet there is still huge demand from Europe!!!!!

PE1-PE4 Jigging equipment is the next BIG/LITTLE thing!

That's just why the SeaGrand Bay Stinger Vertical jig rods are frowned upon by South African Anglers.

They are so indoctrinated with the TV shows that nly 80-130lbs braid with 300-600gr jigs that they try use a 80-150gr jigging rod for 100lbs braid and 20kg of drag and can't understand why tackle failure occurs

Yes you will pick up basses but if the rod, reel and line are balance you'll land the fish after a titanic battle or be smoked one time but then you can get an awesome fight from a Little Eastern Tuna

Yeah Craig - there are some AMAZING ultra-light Jig rods out there - we have only been exposed to a few parabolic specialty outfits proven internationally. The primary rod designers/builders internationally have the great fortune of being exposed to amazing hi-tech blanks that we can only dream of here in SA. Therein lies the problem.....

We see this with the amazing deliverables from Japan from companies like Smith and Carpenter, Taiwan with Jigging Master, New Zealand with Jigstar, Synit and CD, and other specialist producers in Australia, Singapore, Indonesia - and a few other "upstarts" from all over Asia. As I type this I'm way out of date.

And some AMAZING stuff coming out of the States as well. OTI and a HUGE bunch of American others are pushing the envelope in gear development! Have a look at www.360tuna.com

If we have access to these gems of blanks - they cost an "arm and a leg" before a great local rodbuilder finishes off the rod of our dreams, the performance envelope is being DEFINED by what is UNDERNEATH the bling rather than the "pretty" aspects of the rod.

We have access to JM's blanks - for high-end - BIG BUCKS. Ask TW, he has access to the top-end Synit blanks - BIG BUCKS. Why? These are the F1's of fishing..... and we all HATE spending BIG BUCKS for something that is very difficult to quantify to the wife! Fact is, performance, performance, performance..... and it helps to look good as well.  

Haven't yet had the pleasure to try this one mate - any avilable for test-drive?

Anyway - I feel like a kid at the moment.

Linda and Andre FINALLY allowed me to "remove" / "borrow" a JM Saber 100B (overhead) from stock as a sample. Thanks guys!

This rod is rated at 10kg or 22lb at a 50 degree angle. Yup, crazy but true. Put it on our Postal Scale and it weighs 195g. Correct - under 200 grams!!!!!!!! Frikken amazing!

OK - now a reel. We are the JM Agents for Africa so I looked at the JM PE3. Way OVERPOWERED - a JM PE3 maxes out at around 40lb which means at sunset I would potentially destroy the rod. PE3 and PE4 are de-facto for 200g rods and heavier, in fact PE4 and higher.

I need something for PE1-2.

Plan B: Andre already purchased the Daiwa Ryoga Bay Jigger (a JDM enhanced version of the Pluton). Can't go that route......Nepps already has one.

Plan C: My turn, Many thanks to Sollys Anglers Corner Fourways - Omar and Suli - guys, this little Shimmy Trinidad 10a is a gem!!!! Loaded with Jigstar PE1 braid (15lb) - just shy of 400m on a reel with 15.5lb max drag - perfect PE1 setup. Little Beast outfit this one......

On the scale, ready to fish - total weght 690g. including the "Tini Trini" fully loaded.

Plan C: I will shoot a few pics of the setup in the morning and post them here......functional and beautiful.

All that's missing is a decent Seriola on the sharp end...... in a few weeks time.

100% correct. This gear is designed for ULTA-LIGHT application which doesn't prevent the angler from landing his big fish - it forces him to introduce FINESSE in order to do so!

There are no chairs with light gear, and the angler has to earn his catch.

Broken gear you refer to is a huge educational issue that is prevalent in the industry.

It is disheartening sometimes to meet with guys and they show me their mismatched gear they have been sold (and spent BIG loot purchasing)for the trip-of-a-lifetime.

In some instances the gear is so mismatched, that it results in critical failures on the trip and compromises the anglers fishing! WTF!!!!

PS - this is a not the norm but IT DOES HAPPEN - more regularly than it should!

Hell, I'm no Pro but basics are basics.....

When we apply this to lighter gear, the challenge is bigger (excuse the pun) and the margin-of-error smaller.

Such is the nature of the sport we love.

Yip got a client brings back a Bay stinger 7kg rated rod also in 200gr class, tip popped and 3 guides broken.

Waht a k@k rod he chirps, wants a replacement. Find out he put a dogfight with 100lbs Stren superbraid on and when the 2nd Doggie cined him he locked the drag and held on - 50-100gr rod with 7kg Drag rating WTF and they wonder why I don't stock the light jigging rods for RSA market anymore?

Back to the education bit I spoke about?

You have no idea how many people phone me saying they have just spent close on 10k on a new Stella or Dogfight and want the perfect rod to match their new reel....and their maximum budget is 500 bucks for a rod? Mismatch?

Hugely debilitating because they have invested in perfection for a reel and are looking for shit in a rod? this escapes me.........

Maybe we have to start an interview process for people who want to purchase ultra light gear:

Blue Bull Supporter - not a flippen chance, have you seen the size of these people?

Lions Supporter - apparently they don't exist anymore! All emigrated!

Province Supporter - no way, they will commit suicide on the rod tip when the Sharks beat them in the final. Also the smell of freshly flecked snoek takes their eye off the ball.

Cheetah Supporter - YES, Please YES! If someone could show them where the water is! Salt water - like the Indian Ocean where fish live? (Another educational process)

Sharks Supporter - Absolutely!!!! as long as she is one of the Sharks Girls! If she has the letters S H A R K or S on her black & white leotard she is IN!!!! In fact, I am an old Sharky so girls aside they my lads!!!

OK - that is the end on my attempt at humour tonight, thank heavens nobody is reading this. Tomorrow I go back to being a miserable fisherman again.....YeeHaaaa - the wife will chase me away fishing again soon!

I use a 200gram setup as my all round offshore kit and for 95% of the fish we encounter it handles without drama. And then a tail or poensie or copper comes along and the extra bit of backbone comes into play. But then again it's all relative, no point dropping a 1kg livie on a light outfit hey:fbash

Those 100 and 150g jigging sticks are awsome, allways been a fan of JTF 150g pics catching Yellowtail.

I have a little set-up with the Trini 12 or Tigre 100 (Omoto 10VS, Avet SX) on a Trevalla ML stick - great fun.

The light stuff is great and double very nicely as capable bait set-ups for a wide range of bait fishing including the odd chicken live lob cast for barbel and eel in the Tugela.

I also have the Trevalla ML and Trini14 combo, which works like a dream.... well, so far for  bottoms and bait. The only thing I have landed so far jigging was a shad that just made size :-(
