Hey all,

Got a question about dropshotting between rocks and structures. I watched a couple of backfin dvd's where they were dropshotting in kosi bay i think it was, and saw them working their lures between the rocks etc. Obviously on the dvd they didnt get stuck once on any rocks. When i was in PE/DBN in december I went out and tried some dropshotting and had a really rough time getting stuck on rocks all over the show, especially at cape recief. I guess my question is, what can you do to avoid hookups on rocks, does using weedless jigs help alot, or is it a case of "Death and Taxes". I'm coming back in march for a month and want to give it a serious go with my new toys i got over here.

Cheers

Jacques

Had a similar problem when I first fished South Pier here in Richards Bay. Got stuck almost every second cast. A bit heavy on the pocket. Zoemdoef fished weedless and hardly got stuck. The result at the end of the day. CK 1sml, Zoemdoef 2sml + 2 Lrg. Yes. weedless is the answer.

Here is some samples made by Owner.

thanks for the reply ! You wont believe how hard it is to find owner/berkley jigheads in the uk :) Guess I'll have to get them in SA when I arrive.

The hooks/jigheads shown by CK are used for the Texposed rigging of soft plastics as shown in here.  This is probably the best option when you're fishing around structures.

Another option, which is better suited to avoid hooking into weed/kelp, is that of weedless jigs/hooks as in the pics below.  I'm sure with the right wire a DIY jobbie on your jigheads is possible.

Figural speaking those are the only true weedless hooks, well said jaccil. By saying weedless I meant "will not get stuck" type. Sorry;)

I just bought this mold - https://www.do-itmolds.com/prodmolds.aspx?c=23 so i can make 1oz jigs. Thinking about it now, I should have gotten a tad lighter rod then the shimano tiralejo trs90mh2 (1oz - 3oz) as there are a bigger variety of jigs in the sub 1oz range from what i can see.

Thanks for all the input sofar!

Just another fine excuse to get more tackle!::SI haven't used the first 3 jigheads CK mentioned, but the last type is the deal if you can find them. Wish I could get a mold.

If you're struggling getting those hooks to make the jigheads CK showed above, you can always use a hitchhiker (coil) on a normal jighead to rig your soft plastics in this fashion while keeping them well presented.

There are some really nice St. Croix and Lamiglas rods that would go very nicely with the Stella 4k. www.tackledirect.com :>

The St. Croix rods do look beautiful.  The shipping charge to the UK is a bit much and then Customs&Revenue still has to slap on their tax too.  I do need to plan a trip to the States, I've got a lot on my list to buy over there...

There is a really nice Jap plugging rod (Tenryu) being sold in the UK, but at a price of £270 I wouldn't want a red rod.  OH MY WORD, just checked the site and the price went up to £380 because of the Sterling/Yen exchange rate!!  And they're out of stock again.  Crazy...

Hi Guys,

All you need is the Berkley Nitro jigs, these jigs are designed to swim slightly nose down as well as to dislodge them selves from rocks, Rob and Wesley also hardly get stuck on the rocks, and the reason for this is Nitro.

Nitro Rocks

I'd rather get stuck with 20 std jigheads then 1 nitro ( I know they don't get stuck easy, but they do get stuck now and then) and guess what. Those nitros are made out of solid GOLD! or at least Berkley think so when they priced them.

How do they sleep at night?

Now you guys know what its like to be S'Efrican - damn exchange rates! Another good option is the Penn Travel Rods. I wasn't expecting much but they looked pretty well constructed and for $100 or so were an absolute bargain.

They certainly are expensive. They are roughly the same price in South Africa as they are in Australia (worldwide conspiracy ?:p). I've been looking all over for them and they are seriously hard to come by.

Thanks for the info, Van.
