Due to a great run of sailfish and game fish during September most boats, unfortunately, only started fishing for Marlin way late in the month. Besides all the rats being hooked on light tackle sailfish baits, those who brought the heavy guns out on the month´s last week had great action on the big girls. Makaira [/i]reported hooking a stubborn 800 pound fish that chuffed through the leader after three hours, and some days later parting on another of about 600 lbs. Cuba Libre [/i]had better luck tough and caught the first big Black Marlin of the season at 704 lbs, a fish that was unfortunately killed.

Carl Jankowitz fighting a 850 lbs on the first day off the Bazaruto Invitational Marlin Competition. The fish was hooked on giant squid skip bait and successfully released after a two hour fight in extremely rough conditions. This was the first of the 5 Marlin we released aboard Vamizi [/i]to take first place on the event for the third straight year.

The next day was all about getting young Billy (12) his first ever marlin. After jigging at 25 mile in the morning we set lures at 10am and straight after raised a perfect 300 pound that would not bite. Around noon we get a blind strike on the SR and even before Billy jumps in the chair and clips the harness or I have time to turn and chase we are well into the Dacron backing. Only twenty minutes later, after another warp speed run, does she show herself in the distance and I called her an easy 550 pounds. She was a tough deep fighting one and only on the two hour mark do we get the leader for the first time, but she keeps digging her head deep and we have to let go. It runs straight down 30 meters and stops as we feel two big thumps on the rod. Knowing what this means we push the drag to sunset and force her in, but too late as a massive tiger shark follows the head right up to the boat and another lurks 20 meters below. Two fast, clean and powerful bites and all that´s left of this great fish is the 110 pound remains of its head.

After that I decide to downsize the size of the lures to try and get Billy a smaller fish but as Murphy´s law goes, the exact opposite happens, as an hour later we raised nothing but the biggest fish I saw last season (and there were some big fish around) on the SR mini 1656. She comes charging, making a hell of a statement before the tiny offering but never really touches the lure and fades. Seconds later she again comes up, this time on the stinger SPJ, throwing white water everywhere but we can´t get a bite out of her and again she fades, this time for good. But, the day was full of surprises and as we are about to pull lines in at 45m off V mile a small fish charges into every lure on the spread until finally finding steel on the LR Island express and Billy shortly brings in the 80 pound fish for a successful release.
