Howzit Guys,

I took the guys from work on a bay charter on Friday, these guys have probably fished at most 3 or 4 times in their lives and never from a boat. The boat was 21ft Baronet.

Due to a last minute cancellation and Jace calling me at the same time I asked him to fill in, and he kindly agreed. So Jace and I the only 2 on the boat who know a little about fishing, not counting my 2 kids who I took along as well.

we launched a little after 19h40 and headed straight for dumper where we anchored. I sorted the guys traces out and showed them how to put the cracker onto the hook and also warned them not leave the rod down without opening the drag, then I took my place in front of the boat with my 2 kids.

One of my guys Logan, was the first one away with a hookup the rod was bent double and the drag was locked tight and b4 any help or advice could be rendered the line parted, from my experience in the boat I'd say it was a nice size stumpie.

After this things were pretty quite  with only a couple of blacktails and breams coming out, until my 8 yr old had a bite and a hookup and then the reel started a slow and steady scream and I knew that there was a real danger of my son losing the fish although he is quite an acomplished angler for his age, because just b4 hooking this fish I had noticed a knot on the 12 pound line that he was using but I was too lazy change the trace, at the same time Jace had a hookup and his fish took off snapping his line b4 he could even touch his drag leaving him wondering what happened. After fighting the fish for a while and finding himself unable to cope, my son handed me the 6 ft rod and I started to slowly nurse the fish to the boat all the while cursing myself for leaving the knot and not changing the trace.

Every time that I gained line the fish would run and I'd be back to where I started, after about a 20 mins tussle we got our first brief glimpse the fish in the ambient light from the wharf and it looked huge, and my brain screamed 'mussel cracker no, brusher, not sure' but in the water it looked to be easily about 8 to 10 kg I instinctivly loosend my drag a little more and the fish took off again reclaiming most of my hard fought line. I'd say it took me another 10 mins before I eventually gained the upperhand and boated the fish. A rubberlip of 5 kg on the mark.

Sorry for the quality of the pic - camera phone

I think that is an awsome achievemnet boet. From what i know that is probably  one of the top catches this year in the bay if not the best catch. It goes to show the work and effort they are pitting in to clean up the bay is slowly but surely having somekind of possitive effect on the marine life in the bay...

Top Stuff keep it Up..

Im sure Your Lighty must have been super chuffed when you finaly landed it..

Thats what it's all about bru..well done..

Hi Riymos

If what you is true then I am very glad I was there to witness it....as a newcomer to the sport it was the fisrt big fish I have seen bite...fought with..and taken out...

It was 30 minutes of nailbiting stuff as we all knew that Khani line was not very good and he had a knot in it....every time it came close to the boat it took off again.

It was a memorable fight and I think all the guys on the boat really enjoyed a good fight between fish and man....even fight if you think about the tackle that was used.

You know i havent been out much on my boat.I some how over the last year or so have lost interest in the bay as there hasnt been much action in the bay except for the usuall Grunter and very seldom the odd Stumpie.

You know i grew up on the bay so to say and i always remeber the stories my grandfather and family used to tell me about, how the monster stumpies snoek kingfish etc etc used to come out reguarly. But now those catches are few and far between and this catch is something that make me look forward to maybe start going out in the boat again.

Thanks guy's hope it just keeps geting better....

Hey Jace i bet your heart must of been pumping bru that's what this sport is all about,it's a rush unlike any drug you can buy in the street...

Hey Guys,

I definitly think that fishing in the bay is improving, Friday evening  we had 4 big hookups including Jaces ,3 of those ended in bust ups and 1 screamer on a whole Sardine but no hookup.

I also think that when the harbour entrance is widend, fishing will get even better.

Great catch there Khani!!

I have never been out fishing on a boat. Would love the experience though. Can I book a spot next time?

Hi Khani

Dont forget the previous Weekend the fun we had with Wala-wala...we must have landed about 5 and caught two without using hooks.....whats the guys did was put out live bait for a kingie/or similar....when we pulled both baits in  they were gripped tightly by those sharp W/Wals teeth...unfortunely those two were difficult to land.

So between the two trips I would say we seen more action in the bay than the surf in recent months.

Thats great news and congrats on an excellent catch. The harbour entrance has defn improved. We have caught alot of fish, drifting up and down that particular spot:kaykak

I gotta share this with you guys, my best ever experience in Durban Harbour was on a Sunday afternoon. We launched, from yacht mole and headed straight to the coaling dump. Fish there for about 2 hours with not even a peck.:? I decided we try somewhere different, we headed back to centre bank.. there were 4 of us onboard. We pinned about 4 cracker each on our running traces, sent them to the bottom and then drifted..About 10min into the drift all for rods were bent right over:shock:.. we each picked up grunters between the 4-5kg mark.:hungr  It was the most fun i ever had in the harbour...All in all our boat went home with 6 fish.

Cheers

Hey Nivi,

The fish are definitly in Bay, But the trick is finding them. If you are prepared to move from spot to spot then I am quite sure you will pick up something.

Something else that I noticed is that certain spots do well on different tides for eg. I have always caught fish at dumper when the tides was about 2 to 3 hours to high with a light south wester blowing but at High tide dumper goes dead on the other hand the basin has produced more often than not on high tide.

I regret not having kept a detail record of tides, winds, water temp, barometric pressure, catches etc of every fishing trip in the bay for the last 25 + yrs.

I wonder if anyone has any of the above recorded details of their fishing in the bay over some time.

You know that is a very interesting point you make.I also regret noy having GPS cords for all the spots that i had sucess on.But what i do have is a few observations that i jotted down in some of my trips last year, eg spots wind tide time and weather conditions...The only problem is i dont have any confirmation on these.

I also take alot of advise from my elders like my grandfather and dad as they over the years they like yourself are the ones with the experience on the bay.I have found that most of the top producing grounds are still pretty uch the same so to say given that they still produce some good catches even though they mat not be the biggest and the most plentyfull of those day's.

I think it would be great to have a DATA base of spots weather conditiions etc in the bay that we at sealine could use as referrence to when planning a trip etc etc..

Hey Guys,

Thanks.

is coaling dumper near south pier just after the navy base/dbs???
Thats the Place, we normally anchor just inside the yellow bouy. The only hassle here is the peckers don't give you a break at times.
