Hangklip babies

Hi guys,

We went down to Hangklip yesterday,water was beautiful, wind was absent, just before the rise... and then got SMASHED by the baby kabeljou!!!

One after the other, every throw you got something, even crays got hooked, BUT, not a single size fish (or crayfish). what does one do in a situation like this?


Anyone else got some fish over on that side?

What do you do in this situation, put on a bigger bait and hope that there is a bigger one around! Otherwise, have fun catching something!

I started with a 1/O and half anchovies at first, just to see what came out. After the second baby came out I jumped to a 4/O and half strepies that I caught last weekend.
I still hooked babies, and crays, otherwise the smaller fish stripped the hook.
If someone has a chance to chuck a bait out there today/tonight, please let me know if the biggies showed up.

Have had the same action with the baby cob (also at hangklip) - although we got some size ones. But on that day there were a few boats anchored just out of casting range and they were hauling large fish one by one. The water where they were anchored in were also much more discoloured. So herein might lie the secret. Deeper casts and aim for the areas that look slightly more discoloured.

Im thinking the same thing now, if I really tried I probably could have chucked my bait on one of their boats as I was standing on the far in rocks, but what a struggle it would have been to keep a biggy out of the bamboo?!!

Anyone ever caught chocka in Hermanus at the old harbor? How do you go about doing that?

Thanks for the report dude!! Will heading that way on saturday then langebaan on sunday!!.... maybe poppa and momma kob will be around too!! ... where abouts were you catchn the kobbies atleast il get sum activity?? i know the map i supplied onli marks off the beaches and you said you fished off the far rocks??... could you maybe for eg. between 1&2.. lol or mark it off if you can!! Any help will be appreciated! i usaully fish in the bay next to the kliphuis...

If you know the kilphuis you are good to go... literally right infront of the kliphuis there are rocks that lead in quite deep, you can cast from there high or low tide. I saw where the guys from the beach cast and thats about how deep the rocks lead in. If you stand on those rocks you will see the bamboo makes an almost straight line into the deep. I usually cast as far as I can and as close to the bamboo as possible, NOT TOO CLOSE tho, maybe 5m to the left.

I have caught one size cob there last year, about 75cm. also on strepie, so my best advice would be to get down to your nearest harbor/jettie and stock up on that wonderbait!!!

Good stuff Aiden!! Will defentli be fishn that side and also the other two bays to the left! Will definateli keep you updated!! By the way whats the best rig for fishing for kob close to the kelp in your opinion?? I know il be using sum sort of floatation to keep my bait away from the kreefs!! Il be checkn my local fish markets for stepies also!!!

for cob overall I think its best to have a short trace to your hook, and very long to the weight. Id say about 20cm for the hook and 60 for the weight, thats what I used.on a 3-way swivel. And like always, a weaker line to your weight  just incase you hook a biggy and he pulls your weight into the rocks.

Im so jealous, wish I could be there again this weekend, but have to go to Hermanus with the girl:doh
