Hi Basspro

Good to hear... No worries i believe the word you are looking for is ''experianced'' not old. LOL

I always tell my mates i wish i had started this style of angling earlyer. My dad is a deep sea man as long as he can hook his 19foot tomcat and head for the North Coast then hes happy thats how we grew up on the boat deep sea fishing... When Sodwana was still wild Cape vidal was almost impossible to get to and when the 4x4 were still alowed on the beach since that has changed they only go to Mozambique.

Buggers and thats where they are now and have been there since the19th December only comming back Sunday. And here we are in the comfort of our offices infront of Laptops.....

But come 29 Jan then its my turn ''Balito''

Jongie, I am going to be straight to the point here. No offence intended.

Fishing has become a bit of a yuppie fad. People want to spend too much money on equipment, and at local dams I have started noticing a "mine is bigger than yours" attitude.

I say; use whatever works for you and is safe for the fish.

It doesn't help you to arive with 20k worth of gear and catch nothing. You might laugh, but I have seen it happen.

It is nice to compare products, but in the end the best unhooking mat is the one with the fish in it.

My 2c

Do you really think that you will never blank?

I have the Gilfox one, singular to the one from Nash above and must say that I'm going to replace that one asap, although it might be thick enough, the fish needs someone there all the time or it slides off the mat - not that I want to leave the fish there on it's own, sometimes you need to get something - like a camera - don't keep that next to my unhooking mat - water and camera's don't mix well.

Basspro - I know you will not be going for these ones, this is for the benefit of the other members.

Kusaf,

I am not saying that I will never blank. I am, however, saying that I have noticed an increase in uneducated and unknowledgeable folks at dams that somehow managed to get very expensive gear together but did not have the funds to buy a book/dvd/ANYTHING related to specimen fishing.

They pitch up at dams in their shiny cars an immediately antagonize just about every ou sout there. Then they start their generators with their ABSA stadium flood lights and their doef doef music with a couple of snotneusies running around playing hide and seek in my friggen bivvy.

Then Mr money will tell you that since he's got gazillians of bucks invested in this outing, you can like it or go fish somewhere else.

I am not refering to my fishing skills here. I am refering to a type of angler that has recently become fairly common at local lakes. The type of angler that will loudly challenge all and sundry to a "who's got better equipment" match

Does that make sence to you?

I am saying that you need to be comfortable with yourself and be responsible when you fish. And no thousand bucks unhooking mat will ever help you with that. At the end of the day, you need to be comfortable with your gear.

Tell you what; here's a question for Mr. Money next time you see him. Ask him if he has got any anti-biotics. No, not the type you get at medicross. The type you apply to fish. That ALWAYS tells me wether an angler is serious or not.

Just my 2c

Ok - here's my deal: I've pulled some magazine's last night and looked at all available un-hooking mats out there - It's not about the best un-hooking mat is with a fish on it or I won't go for a local brand name or just buy the first thing I come across 'cos it "looks good" No

It's about what carp fishing "IS TO ME" & carp fishing to me is - Buy the best U can afford - do it right or don't do it at all" - most of all enjoy your day at the water. Now it's like saying the best 4x4 is the one U find yourself in - no dude's. The best thing is to do the best thing for yourself...yes there are the "money spinners" out there with the best of everything, whether they catch carp or not is not my business....... which brings me to the next point: whether some here take offence is not an issue with me 'cos I really & truelly don't care-

Case in Point:
The Bank Angler depicts a local "Pro-Specimen Angler" - ok years ago we've met this angler & "others" at some big waters fishing. On our arrivals at these venues we see a canoe, mats etc...& lo & behold "2 pods with 4 rods each..excuse me he is fishing 8 rods & his buddy an extra 3.." Is that "a Pro-? A Specimen Angler? .... to me its plain down greed & stupidity because "look at me I can afford "everything" & believe me they did have the best of it all....enuff now on this..

The point I'm trying to make is that Joe Soap & Co out there fishing with 2 or 4 rods max is doing the same thing & might be catching well...or not. Irrespective my pocket limits (& I have them boys) I will buy the best I can afford at the time 'cos my life is structured, organised and I know my responsibilites are taken care of...

So the Fox Stalker unhooking mat is for me ... I don't need a weigh sling so that's the one I'm gonna get.

I don't look at another anglers gear & drool - I have my own ..yes I'll perhaps compliment him on a nice set-up..whether he can catch carp or not is his perogative guys..

To each his own !! stick with that !!

I also use klin-ik.

At he end of the day it isour responsibility to look after the fish. I have seen lots of fish come out of florida lake with scars. It seems some people don' care about the wellbeing of their fish.

I use a spray-on for open wounds. These days, it saddens me to say, the majority of fish I see are not at all ingod condition

Lost in translation is all I can say.

Ek staan met die vis, want ek gebruik 'n tafel vir my unhooking.

And yes, I am an angler, couldn't realy care to be classified as any specific type.

1. I fish responsible.

2. I care for the fish and the environment

3. To me, It's not about who's got what. It's about fishing.

And no, I am not about to start a word contest. In my opinion (and it is just mine) one can see from how the angler handles his catch if he is serious about the fish or not.

As for my stomach, it makes the fish feel safe.:ifishin they can see I'm not hungry :)
