I suppose one can keep a fish in a carp sack for extended periods but it is not advisable. Keep the fish in a carp sack only for as long as is necesarry.

A good carp sack will enable the fish to still swim around in the sack and therefor I always attach a long cord to my sack.

Never sack a fish in water shallower than 1 meter
Never sack a fish if you know there is otters around
Go and check the sacked fish at regular intervals
Watch out for crabs as well although I have never had problems with them as the fish can move off with the sack, but they can cause damage to the sack
Make sure that the sack is secured properly so that the fish do not swim off with the sack - it surely is going to die
Hang up the sack in a tree or away from the ground because the rodents love the fishy smell and chew the sack to pieces
Make sure your sack is dry before you store it otherwise it may rot

Many people are not in favour of sacking fish but if you take precaution it should not do any harm to the fish. Be ready when you take out a sacked fish - they are very lively after their rest period.

In a tree?? NO WAY!! My sack hangs where it hangs I wil fight of the rodents!! Wha ha!!

Well done MC

Hello Anton

It all depends on your budget

My Landing Net is a no name brand one, that I bought for R200. It works perfect. I do not see the need to go with a brand name on this, as long as the mesh is very SOFT as not to damage the scales.

I bought a DOCKS basic unhooking mat from Solomons in PTA North for R199. Its basic, but it works Perfect for me.

As for the weight sling, I do not have one yet, as I always use my fishing partners weight sling. But once again, you do not have to break the bank on this one.

If you however want the creme de la creme of carp safety, look at this article that appeared in TL in July.
http://www.martinlouwbaits.co.za/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=40:big-carp-hunting-4-&catid=27:sltl&Itemid=81
Here, Martin Louw explains the in's and out's of carp safety equipment and he makes a couple of recommendations.

Hope this helps. Carp care first!

Cheers

Good heavens but specimen fishing is complicated. I have great respect for you guys and I am trying my utmost best to always handle the carp or any fish as if it was my own baby. I am a conventional angler at the moment and slowly want to start specimen fishing , but to be honest it sounds very complicated.

I would just like to know is it really worth it all. I understand there can be no better feeling and accomplishment than catching that 40 or 50lb fish but how many in a year do you catch one of those?

What does one of your sessions consists of and is it worth it to do specimen fishing for just two days at a venue?

From what I understand and have read is that it takes days and some times weeks of preperation for you guys at on spot but do you catch more than what you blank?

I am really not trying to be funny or attack any specimen fisherman and as I said in the beginning I have the biggest respect for you guys. I am just trying to find out if it is really worth it to spend so much time, effort and money?

Osie, if you are after catching big carp, then a definite YES, it is worth all the effort. And no you dont need weeks of preparation. At least half of my sessions have been 2-day/overnight sessions and have had many good fish from it.

Yes, it can be quite complicated, because we're not just fishing for anything that bites, we are trying to outwit the big ones. BUT, it does not have to be complicated either.

In my opinion its not just about catching that 40 or 50lber. Yes, each one of us has a target size in mind that we want to catch, but on the road to that 50 there are plenty 20, 30 and 40lb carp to be caught and enjoyed. Its about catching big carp, and anyone who's had their share of 30lb+ carp will tell you that they enjoy every biggie they catch, as each one is unique...

Blanking is part of the game, and even in conv. fishing guys blank. Blanking is not nice, but I have learnt alot from them and it is part of big carp fishing... big carp are more weary so you have to outwit them...so sometimes the carp wins, lol!
But I can tell you that the better you get at specimen carp fishing, the less you blank. Suppose thats the same for any sport really... over the last year I've had very few blank sessions...

I'm not sure if specimen fishing is that much more expensive than conv. fishing... give me 2 rods, banksticks, some hair rigs, and a bucket of maize and I'll be set for an overnighter! ;)

middig, ek het op FB gesien hoe een ou die karp vas hou met sy 2 vingers in die kuwe, dit is onervaarbaar en daar is geen carp care daar nie.

Great post there mate, as i agree totally. Catch and release is my motto - with all safety applied during the process ofcourse.

I have learnt a few tips there and will apply those from now on... feel bad for the ones i mis-handled in the past now due to my lack of knowledge. But i always chat with my fellow campers and fishermen when it comes to carp fishing. Will keep these tips in mind mate.

what do you sucgest is the best way of keeping carp over nite when fishing in the summer ? i read a lot of fishing books they say tha bigger carp are mostly active at night while the smaller carp seeks colder water what wuld you use instead af a nylon keep net ?

i read you post and started wondering whitch will be the bestway for me as well as the carp

Thanx for the contributions on this thread guys. Im still very much conventional, but I've decided to start moving over to Specimen, or at least starting to learn the tricks of the trade, so that I might one day hold that prize fish in my hands, I get a head rush when I watch some of the big carp fishing videos, I'm going knucking futs! So, I've been looking around at prices of the start-up gear, I must say that the prices of some of the gear can be a bit expensive. I read on one of the other threads, somebody asked a straight question, how much it would cost to get started, & the responses were to the tune of 10K, another guy said 12K....translated means my wife's gonna fry me alive! ANyways, carelvanheerden's response was quite an encouragement, coz it highlights that you dont need to be all that fancy, the necessary will do :) Im going shopping soon, first on the list - unhooking mat, landing net, rod pod/alarms/swingers; & from what I saw on offering at WA, they have some nice combo deals for the pod/alarms/swingers for under R2K. Brand names like Sensation/Jackal etc. I get that alot of guys smaak the fancy stuff, but when there's a budget & a govt & savings plan & petrol & all that stuff to consider, Im gonna have to opt for affordability & give macho the boot....Gordhan keeps saying we dont save enough as South-AFricans , so frugality & sensibility are gonna have to be the way to go. So does Specimen become addictive to the extent that you totally don't care for a bit of catfish hunting guys? & how about the odd excursion with the laaities to the Vaal for a bit of tempo, & perhaps showing off your super advanced methodology & know-how?

No worries steelpulse007. Just keep at it and do everything you can to be prepared for every session...absorb the knocks and blanks and put it to good use on your next sessions. And enjoy being out there.

Thanks for making these statements.
I agree fully with you in every word. It is imperative that we approach our sport with respect and a strong sense of preservation. There is a lot to be said about the sensitive balance of the ecosystems that we intrude and the ages that it takes for our great carp to fully grow.
The 10kg carp you catch today is also the 20kg carp you may catch in a few years.

There is an onus on each of us who have read this statement to actively assist to educate; and if necessary reprimand others that we see harming carp, at the waters edge.
Your action is an investment in your own sport. The corollary is that, this very waters edge if you choose to turn a blind eye, will not be worth visiting in the future.

I have not been active here for very long and I have now done a reasonably good effort at reading a few threads and notice that there are photos where good folk are standing with fish and holding dirty fish which is a dead give away that the fish was lying on the ground. I might get flamed but I am really going to send those of you that are guilty a friendly pm.
OK?
