Jam fly? Nicely done Occie, neat bit of tying there.

Ja or atleast my attempt at one.

Weighted in the tail and a little bit of foam in the head so it sits upright with the hook point just of the ground.

I recently started the topwater for grunter thing and am enjoying it immensely.

A few questions have popped into my mind while slowly working the Skitter V over the banks, and I would appreciate some help from the more experienced topwater grunter hunters...

When fishing in wind, do you get better success retrieving the lure with, or against the wind?

Same with current? Retrieve the lure against the current or with the current?

My feeling is retrieving with the wind/ current is better, because prawns are not strong swimmers and will be swept with the wind or current when swimming on the surface, and I'm trying to imitate a surface swimming prawn.

When fishing in brighter, clearer, less windy conditions, do you slow down the retrieve, or speed up?

Also, is there a preferable "bank" to fish in specific winds? IE is it better to fish from the river bank the wind is blowing from, or against?

Here's what I like, for what its worth:

I prefer retrieving into the wind, I find it easier to work the lure correctly. I don't think it matters to the fish which way the lure is going.

Current for me depends on my position relative to the spot I'm fishing and what I'm trying to do. If I'm fishing very shallow mud flats where the fish are wary and I need a bit more finesse in my presentation I like to have the lure moving with the current in the direction of the fish.

I like fishing with the wind on my back, simply because it makes accurate casts a lot easier and also because I prefer to work the lure against the wind.

Retrieve speed is dictated by the mood of the fish. Sometimes they like a bit of violence, sometimes they like a bit of finesse ;)

Hope that helps.

Thanks a lot Eugene. I enjoyed a lot of success on my first few tries with the topwater, but the last weekend or 2 has been a struggle. Water has been getting clearer which I think also makes the topwater grunter catching more difficult.

Hi Houtarm.
I agree with retrieving into the wind. Easier to work the lure properly. Slow does the job for grunts though have had them smash an xrap being worked fast for leerie. irrespective, i think despite the conditions (bright and sunny or overcast) slow retrieve works best.
Allways seem to find i get more action when there is a wind chopping up the surface a little. Twitch twitch twitch pause. The pause can be longer than one would expect, infact iv had more hit a stationary lure than one being worked. i dont think current or wind direction makes to big a difference, apart from physically working the lure. especially as they are genarally targetted on the flats and the main current would be running along the channel.
skitter v, xrap and zig stick have produced best for myself and most who target them in the eastern cape anyway.
Hope this helps
