Groenvlei fishing and water level

Hi guys.  Has anybody been to Groenvlei recently?  I want to go fishing in April but I have heard that the water levels in the South Cape dams are extremely low.  Any info would be appreciated.

Hey MB, yes groenvlei's water level is very low and the water is extremely clear, but this only means that you must do some sight fishing. I went out a couple of months ago on groenvlei, caught two nice size fishies. My advise would be, go early as possible so you could get parking, and the wind tends to pick up from about 9 or 10 in the morning.

Remember to take your camera and post pics MB. I caught my fish on a big bite bait called a squirrel tail worm in the watermelo red colour. Go check it ou in the link below.
I was a bit suspect when i baught them, but sofar they worked at groenvlei and at fisher's havan. I find the strikes to be nice and agressive so you know the hook is set properly.

And like prokayak said, check your battery and somer take a stand by for in case.

Thanks for all the advice.  Planning to take trolling motor and deep cycle along. My previous trip was last year Feb and we caught all our fish on soft plastics , mainly flukes , dead ringers and power worms.  Best colour was watermelon red. Water clarity was very good and caught a few by sight fishing.

Another one caught early in the morning last year Feb.. The fish was active for about an hour and then it went dead suddenly. It was mainly due to an ice cold wind and fog coming in from the sea to ruin a morning that started out perfectly sunny and warm...

i miss that dam so much, thats my home town and its the only thing i miss of it, and maybe the garrick in the mouth in sedgefield itself as well.

I remember few years back, there was a ringwork which is "see through" with chartreuse tail, salt and pepper flavour, package in some usa packaging.

That was very successful at its time, caught many of fish there.

Somewhere near the centre of the dam (lol good luck in finding that) there is a small inlet, many of the larger fish has been caught there with crankbaits, big lips deep divers, climbing into the grass there.

I have found my larger ones more to the other side of the dam to the left when you standing on the launch jetty.

Disadvantage of fishing there is that if the wind comes up strong, you going back against the wind - hence spare battery necessary.

Speak to the owner of the fishing shop, he used to run a charter on the lake at some stage, i ran a small one on the lake as a holiday job when i was still in school and knew the dam very well, and he always out fished me, both him and his son. He often share information, sure he will help you out with some "local advice".

Catch some nice ones there, show us how its done

Fished Groenies yesterday. Not bad, water level still low, but very fishable. Got all our quality fish right up in the reeds, mostly small flukes (green pumpkin, watermelon gold), nd small profile spinnerbaits (white and chart) in the wind. Fish are very skraal tho? Huge heads and long thin bodies, that said, they did fight like crazy. Oh yes, the water is still super clear. Stealth all the way! Enjoy.
p.s. Huge Tilapia cruising the backwaters, good luck catching the buggers!

I heard of a contamination scare at groenvlei a few weeks back. My neighbor and his mate went out the one day, and were fishing close to the one house that's located on the N2 side (the only house on that side)- when they spotted what appeared to be raw sewage floating around. They immediately contacted cape nature, and they were going to do some tests and what not. What a shame, i love groenies. Anybody know any more about this?

Also- a good mate of mine that works at the lake pleasant hotel can confirm that one of the workers there hooked a 4,5kg LM on a live kurper in December- shattering the old record of 4,1 kg.

Hey Bandit.  We fished the afternoon session down the N2 side, very shallow, but nice nooks and crannies in the reeds.  Probably started fishing at 'bout 2 or so, and systematicaly got fish all afternoon, biggest was 1.65kg, but that thing should have weighed at least 2kg.  As I said the majority of our fish were very skinny.  Has anyone else been noticing this lately?  It seemed like the better keepers were underfed, and all the runts were fat little buggers.  There are tons of little baitfish cruising around tho?
