Hi Obsession.

The carp angling we practice cant really be used from a boat. I dont want to be rude but I dont think we have anything to offer you.

Do you guys practice catch and release?

Werner i think in my first post I did cover all the aspects you refer to. And for the guys jumping on the bandwagon about the studies conducted on carp get real. How many fish do you think is caught on a three day session? I dont know if Rhodes uni will do studies on all of them.

If all you guys condone fish murder and keepnets then surely this is not a specimen carp forum anymore.

Kusaf, I don't condone fish murder, nor keepnets. I am not jumping on the band wagon either.

I enjoy the Specimen Forum Group as much as the next guy.

I have learned more on this specimen forum than any other. I am just saying that, before people start judging other people, first try and get some clarity about what and why they do what they do.

Like I said, we don't know what size and how many fish they use to do the research on. If they are using the biggest fish that they catch, it is sad indeed and I hope they catch none, but if they are using the smaller ones to ensure that the water is clean and that there are no chemicals etc. that will prevent the carp and other fish species from growing, then surely that is not a bad thing.

This forum is here for people to learn, not just about their own style, but about other styles of fishing as well. If people are going to use the information to catch BFC's, mishandle them and weigh them by hooking through the lip or gill, then I will be the first to refuse to give infomation.

No hard feelings....

sorry guys i'm with kusaf, he made it painfully clear in his first post, if fish are being studied for age, i can almost promise you its the biggest oldest ones... well most of us know how damaging keepnets are, if keep nets are the norm, i do not condone, nor should anyone serious about specimen angling regardless if its for research or not, and now that i think of it, we fished for research a few years back and the guys at wits asked us to help we were 2 anglers and 2 researchers fishing and we got the sample stock they needed in a few hours, its not needed for the massive 6 day comp for research... i've had my say...

Hey Obsession,

You give limited info regarding the dam, but I deduce that the fish seem relatively easy to catch because it is well stocked.

With prebaiting you want to attract the fish, but also keep them in the area so they are still there when you fish the comp. I'm going to keep it extremely simple as you mentioned you have no knowledge or experiene regarding carp fishing. Go buy chico or cruched maize at a petshop or "Koperasie". I have NO IDEA about the size of the dam - use your discretion, but I would say 10kg is a good start. Then also take a 4kg bag of Supercast Popcorn feed. Just add boiling water to the chico/cruched maize until it has stopped absorbing water. So add water, leave for a few hours, add more water. This will happen over about 48hrs. Mix the popcorn feed with this and feed your area.

Buy another two bags of 4kg popcorn feed for the weekend and prepare another 10kg of chico/crushed maize to use as a groundfeed for topping up through the weekend.

Hookbaits. KOO Whole Kernel Corn and Chickpeas. Take some MOIRS Caramel and Banana essence with ass well. Mould a ball of popcorn feed on the sinker and put some essence on it.

I'll post the description of trace tomorrow.

I'm a big carp angler. I don't agree with keepnets, but you asked nicely for advice so I will give it to you. I'm not doing anyone a favour by withholding info. In due time, keepnets will be phased out of comp angling in south africa, but refusing anglers info on a forum will not erradicate the use of keepnets. Rather, it creates a bad image of "specimen" anglers...man I'm a friendly. Afrikaans guy who likes helping other anglers catch fish! Obsession, all the best with that comp!

siocnarf, as you just read you are classified as a big carp angler/specimen angler if you are friendly and have a pb of 9kg. Fish care does not have anything to do with it. We should get Ryan to change the sections name to "Papgooi"

Crushed maize does not need to be cooked if it has been soaked with hot water over a period of 48hr.

Ok rietvlei trace. You have a base line of thick mono, around 20lb, Diamond araty is good. Tie it to a size 14 barrel swivel with a half turn blood knot. Cut it off around 50cm. Thread a small bead on, then a MO or M1 1/2 sinker, then another bead. Tie an overhand loop in the base line so that it's length is around 30cm. Tie 10lb XX to the swivel for a hooklink with a half turn blood knot. LCut it off around 20cm. Tie on a daiichi DH55 size 2 hook with a half turn blood knot, so the hooklink has a length of 15cm.

Make a dough from water, icing sugar and cake flour. If the sweetcorn and chickpeas are slow, use the dough - always worked for me.

Jeepers talk about swinging hand bags here again.......
Obsession - Sorry bud but I think that maybe you posted in the wrong section and it may have been better to post this thread in the General section.

Specimen Carp anglers are after that big one (The biggest fish in the pond so to speak) they pay great attention to the detail of Carp Safety, release etc etc etc - Fanatics so to speak.

Where as if I understand the LTB guys are more after the volume of fish so to speak as apposed to singling out that big one....

I hear both sides of the argument - but really without getting into too much of a bun fight there is room for all facets of angling in this country - certainly carp are not a threatend species and certainly our waters could do with the removal of a lot of smaller fish - by this I am not trying to justify that fish should be manhandled but common guys a chap has got to start somewhere. You guys did not all become Specimen anglers overnight and you had to start somewhere....
Be a little more accomodating and "Educate" rather than come out swinging....
Twakkie - good for you the information is good and concise and is going to produce a good tempo and not nessarily lure the big fish

Guys, Obsession didnt say ALL fish goes for research porpuses. Here's a quote from Obs.'s earlier post :  "Rhodes University do their research in conjunction to the competition and most fish are released"

Well said Ryan. Let me not start again with the real value of removing small carp from our overpopulated dams, cos it wont just be handbags flying... more like "K*k en hare!!!!" :uzi

siocnarf, did you know that the famous Tony Davis-Patrick uses uncooked maize quite abit? I know why he does it, but I prefer cooked maize 10 times over!!!! not just for it being more carp-friendly, but for it being alot more attractive than hard, dead dry maize...!
Twakkie, the difference between soaked crushed maize and cooked crushed maize is big, in my opinion! lol...:fbash

MC I met Tony on his last trip to SA. He spent a day talking kak with myself and Ettienne at Top Lake while we fished. Dont give him too much credit.

MC I agree that obsession said that not all carp go to studies but the other carp that die will be given to the locals. Thats what I mentioned earlier with everyone jumping on the studies bandwagon and looking past the other facts of carp death and mishandling. I fully agree with controlled stock in our waters but I can promise you the thirties being landed will end up on a scale a few hours later and not just the small ones. I just hope all the guys blank on a comp like that!!!

Rhodes have tagged a number of fish and how do you recover the info on tagged fish? You have to catch them and what a better way to catch them than have a number of people do it at one particular occasion covering a vast area of the dam.

Anyway I am sorry I posted this thread as I said I am a total novice on carp fishing and if that is your guys attitude to bring one on board then I'd rather stay a novice and fish with real anglers.

Thanks but no thanks.

You see, we could've handled this one abit better. Sometimes we are our own worst enemies... we are so hellbent on protecting the big carp that we overdo it. Obs made it clear that he does not like killing fish and that he's actually part of an environmental group preserving an estuary etc, it was still not good enough to help the guy...eish. How many of you are part of a conservation initiative? Why not just point the guy in the right direction and the LEAVE it at that, instead of blowing things out of proportion, flipit!

"If all you guys condone fish murder and keepnets then surely this is not a specimen carp forum anymore" - LOL, KUSAF...:hyst:

by the way, I dont rate TD Patrick very highly either.... never met him, enjoyed his dvds, but I've heard enough about him...;)

as for the question why dont you just use the normal why of fishing? some milie bomb with some koo? or worms? or bread?
dude to catch a carp does not meen you must use specimen style!

Hi Guys, see you were all playing nice.........!! LOL !!!!

This is what I meant with the 6 points I mentioned in the other post, but hey, I'm not getting involved here.

schelton, there will always be things like this, as long as there is spec and conv angling, lol...
Pity Obsession got such a bad impression from this, but whats been said has been said and we can only move on...

Life's a "beach" hey...

Yip but why did he post here if the first reason i said try the general section......... But ya what has been said has been said!!!!!

KUSAF and carpfinder18...did you read Obsessions post properly....and secondly you could have just said to him that he posted his question in the wrong section...we all fisherman in this forum and some of us are experts and others novice..what it comes down to is we all here to learn something new from ppl like you guys to help us in the future and not be dissed...just something to think about...

I am a member of the Zwartkops Trust and environmental group (the oldest of its kind in the country) who preserve the Swartkops River and surrounds. I also lead a group of volunteers who give their time to MCM to enforce compliance at our Estuary. To date I lie 5th out of more than 400 anglers at the Rod Club (biggest in the country too) angling ladder. I have not one river league point the past two years as I won't kill a fish to claim the points. All river fish must be weighed at the Club house which makes it impossibhle to garranttee safe release.

Does that look like a person who wants to kill fish for fun....i dont think so....

just my 2c

muscle cracker I think it is you that are not reading the post. if someone does not want to fish river angling because he has to weigh it at the clubhouse then why the f*&k do you want to do LTB (light tackle boat) fishing? How can you guarantee the fish safety on a boat and keepnets in said style of fishing? Yes I agree that I should have said in my first post that he is in the wrong section but please dont try and justify fish murder.

I have just had a interesting coversation with guys that fish wemmerpan and there club waters donaldson...they only target big carp and they all have carp over 50lb in this country and the uk ...they all agree in order to produce big healthy carp the biomas of a specific water needs to be maintained..so in lamen terms lots of small carp (30 lb and less) should be removed from the water to ensure there is enough food to sustain big fish...

you should know donaldson ...what happens to the fish under 20lb ...???

Just one last question...all these statement on that obsession is going to kill fish...is this based on FACT or ASSUMPTION....

KUSAF

Senior Member
mc. i am donaldson at the moment and yes we do move commons under 10kg down to the bottom lake. the problem with comp bank and ltb angling is that if they catch a 50lb fish it goes into a keepnet and thats where the fish gets hurt and worst case killed. sustaining a good head of carp is not the topic under discussion here.

if you read post #9 from obsession you will see that he mentions that the locals can collect the fish that died of natural causes. what is natural of a death for a fish in a keepnet? Im awaiting your reply in anticipation...

i am 100% behind you when it comes to keep nets ....i will not use one cause of the fact i only belive in catch and realease...i am sure there isnt a natural death in a keep net....

as you say this is not about sustaining health carp or is it ...if you get rid of more small carp the better and bigger your catch will become...and you know aswell as i do the amount off effortand skill you need to catch those big 50lb + carp is huge...what is the chances of that happening...well you can only hope so..

i know that those 10kg fish that you talking about dont always survive.....

so my point is that we as fisherman can only hope that ppl handle the fish in the best way ...i dont think ppl on this forum murder fish for fun...
