I do understand and i don't have anything against it,it's just that Rags said that the clubs rules for the league was that no fish were to be gaffed.So what i thought was that it was a hard and fast club rule so to say.
If it is then how do they as a club determine which was a necessary gaffing of a fish and which wasn't? You know what i mean,it could become a very contesiouc issue between clubs and anglers to decide which fish they gaff and which they don't.
I feel if you have to gaff for competition purpioses then yeah as long as you are extremely carefull with the positioning of the gaff and the handling of the fish there after..

Ps..You know what i have to put my hat out to the boys at ESA though they go to the extreme when landing big sharks and rays and any of there fish.Have you seen any of there last episodes.Boet i telling you that takes big marbles to do what they do...

Northern Gauteng is falling in with SASAA rules and yes well no gaffing what so ever. I was on the SA development nationals in January and my guide gaffed my Raggie in the Dorsal fin. this resulted in serious argument and the last day we where informed no gaffing was allowed as they had failed to mention it on the first day. As a result I dont even take a gaff with anymore.
I agree a well placed gaff is OK but you get people that gaff anywhere they can get the gaff in - sometimes into the sharks stomach or vital organs.
Secondly not gaffing a shark can result in serious injury as Raggie is very quick on strike rate and can almost bite its on tail. I have heard on quite a few people being bitten this way well trying to land a Raggie
on the lighter side - a couple of guys where fishing in Namibia for Bronzies when they hooked into one after a lengthy fight one angler went to gaff the shark in the breakers and by mistake gaffed a bronzie that was swimming passed that moment and not the other shark that was hooked up - apparently it was quite comical and loooked like something out of cartoon

I am no competition angler and dont have much experience with the comp side so here is a question.
I have lseen over the years a number of Guy's that fish deep sea use the flying gaff i think it is.I think what they do is attach a rope of ome sort t the gaff and then tighten the rope around the tail of the fish and land it that way.In fact i saw it on DSTV in a shark comp wher they pulled the dam shark along side the boat...Now i know that this is not ethical, but what i am trying to get at is with so many competition anglers and clube fishing so often and catching so many inedibles which now days seems to be the fish most targeted because of the amount of points they accumalate by hooking these non eds.
Well why the hasnt someone come up with a less stress or harmfull method of landing these monsters.I would think that with all those collective minds out there someone could maybe design some sort of landing gaff so to say,something like the rope idea you know so that we could have an alternate way of landing these animals without having such a detremental eefect on their health and well being..
Just a thought let me know what you guy's think or maybe if there is soe brilliant plan already out there in place that i dont know about yet ....

Did any of you see the Mad Fin Shark?? tournament program on ESPN where they actually gaff the sharks in the Mouth in order to release them once measured and their reasoning behind this is it is safe to do as result of sharks diet including stingrays and many of sharks caught had these stingray bards embedded in their mouth causing no harm to the shark
however I reckon those sharks caught with barbs in their mouth have a serious temperament problem - will i would if i had something embedded in the roof of my mouth

by pulling the shark out by its tail - some in the know say that causes damage to the sharks spine and it pops the gel or cartilidge between the joints or something like that
with regards to point system - Border has as far as i understand changed there scoring system that inedibles between 100 - 150 score 40 and 150 -200 scores 50 points or something like that which is more reasonable

Take a look at the ESA mag in the Q&A section.A reader asked the same question about pulling sharks backwards out of the sea i think,Or i think i watched it when they asked BRUCE MANN of ORI and the awnser either way was that if you did it gently with out jerking the tail then yes it was fine to pull then backwards..
The reason for not jerking the is that their backs or spines may break or become hurt and damged if we jerk them.They say try and keep the shark with the water as a bed so to say underneath the fish so they dont hurt their internakl organs..
As for ESPN well i watched a Thresher Shark Tornament on ESPN and that is where i saw this gaffing thing and the rope being applied to the tail and the the shark being towed out after that...
I think i have also seen huge Marlon being boated in this way as well,My reason for asking this is that i wanted to know if the clubs or anyone can maybe use this as an example and maybe devise a similar system for competition anglers to enable them to ladn these monsters with out injuring them in anyway,also if you say that the use of a gaff is now banned then how the heck is one going to land a huge shark of a high cliff or gully...

the ESPN one I was talking about the sharks where released and depending on the species of sharks caught anything over certain length counted and you got for example 100 points regardless of the weight but it had to measure more than a certain length. and they would gaff the shark in th mouth (also helped them top cut the trace off short or retrieve the hook) and apply lasso rope around the tail and stretch the shark next to the boat to see if it met the minimum length and then was released. also a certain species of shark gave them negative points.
