Got Turtle???

On our recent trip to Hellsgate, Graeme was defintely the angler of the trip... he put in so many hard hours both on the boat, where he was sea sick as a dog, and on land where the conditions kicked our butts, Graeme fished his butt off, putting in long hard hours, and got just rewards on the fish front... I certainly take my hat off to him, for his hard efforts...

Anyway, one of his captures while swimming livebaits off the point at Hells Gate was pretty damn memorable...

What started off as a hopefull big GT, then became a big Johnny in our minds, actually ended up as this Monster Loggerhead Turtle which gave him the fight of his life in the hectic swell and currents of the Hells Gate point and Channel...

Thankfully the Turtle was not actually hooked, the leader was wrapped around his front right flipper, and no damage to him was caused whasoever...

I'd guess the weight as 100 plus kilos as it took 4 of us straining to move him...

Unfortunately not the GT or Johnny we were looking for, but great to see such a beautiful creature up close without causing him any damage...

And Graeme enjoyed the fight, and of course swam another bait almost immediately afterwards!

I had a similaur experience when I thought I had hooked into a decent sized cob at Breede... sadly it was a small turtel.. dont ask me which species. That weekend was a nightmare. Hooked into just about everything except fish. Landed a seagull as well.

The bugger took the Popper and just refused to let it go from his beak. no harm no foul... both were released successfully with out any harm.

They sure are strong...I caught  a small one a couple years ago off a jetski at Ponta trolling a  Rappie over the shallow reefs.

Foulhooked into the thick skin in the hindleg/flipper. One thing i noticed is that these loggerheads dont like riding on jetski's, cause I battled my arse off to get it on it to remove the hook. Eventually got it out with a pair of longnose pliers with the turtle still in the water , boxing me with it's front flippers ! It was fun though!:dban:

3 Turtles in 3 days of Mazeppa.

Day 1, Ferci from Slovakia landed one of about this size, caught and landed from Shark point on a whole Chokka.  We landed it because it was hooked in the mouth and we didn't want to send it out with a slide trace in it's mouth.

Day 2.  Zaine hooked a small one of about 40kg of the Island on octopus meant for a Kob.

Day 3.  I was fishing in a rather wild water section of the Boiling pot.  Slid a whole Octopus of about 60cm in after having heard of some big Zambies in the area and Mazeppa's Zambies are according to Wesley quite partial to a fresh Occie.

Slow steady pull and my first thoughts was a flatfish, through the turmoil I saw a big flat brown and white suspect before the next wave hit the pot  "Yes man a Giant Duckbill"

Over the mountain and down to 2nd beach, long hard pull and after about an hour here pops a Mother of all wild coast turtles out, wildly flapping it's flippers at me Ferdi falls down in fits of laughter while I just about collapse from exhaustion and all he can sa is Koriknacka Soup (Turtle soup) for the whole of mazeppa.  The thing was probably 150-180kg and was hooke solidly in the tongue. Unhooked and our next fit of laughter was Ferci trying to hold the turtle still on the beach so we can click a pick.  He sits astride a hissing and puffing turtle and it simply waddles off into the surf with Ferci and later Zola riding bareback.

Can't for the life of me find the picks but to paint a pic, huge Turtle with mussels and barnacles growing on his head and shell and one very Peed angler (myself)

Hiya Neps,

Did that thing myself off Mapuzi at last years Birthday Bash!

Slid out a whole chokka and got a slow steady run. Picked up the rod and felt a heavy weight without the run...strang way of fighting theis 'fish' was showing. Got it into the side only to find a godd 120kg+ Loggerhead turtle!!

I have caught a pig on the breede river before...which can be a long story to tell, but at least this catch belonged in the water! LoL!!

Green turtles are a relatively common summer visitor to the Paradise Beach reefs. This one was caught a couple of years ago on chokka and coincidentally one was caught yesterday by a Gus Kholner angler. Not big, under 20kg

3 of us went deep-sea fishing a few months back, just outside Richards Bay and until we eventually moved, every one of us had a chance to hook what appeared to be the same massive Turtle. We were bottom-fishing, using big chunks of chokka and we all had the chance to be punished by having to reel it in, just to have our hooks come out of it's beak at the last minute nice and straight... lol. My father-in-law actually kept one of the hooks as a keep sake, straight as an arrow... lol.
