Good news for False Bay

If every fishermen, recreational or commercial do his or her bit for the enviroment we won't have any problems. Stick to size and bag limits thats all. But how the hell are we going to do that??? More and stricker law enforcement!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Cor Jo

It would be handy if the trekkers voluntarily agreed to stay out of the water and wait for scientists to tell them when to go back.

I like your thinking bru! We need to look at the future and if it means making some sacrifices than so be it. It can only be a good thing!

I'm also firmly convinced that the shore angler and especially those who turn the beaches into a mini Paris/Dakar at night make a significant impact on the fish.

Few adhere to regulations and often way exceed their daily bag limits on size and undersize fish.

Maybe a ban on night fishing in certain areas of false bay would be a start.

Hi Andre

We haven't heard from the ANC fishing desk for a while.

I was wondering if you had all been singing "Kill the Boer" so much that you had forgotten to come onto Sealine. ::wlkcmb

Most of us have been following the 500 ton or so overcatch on the interim relief kreef. What is sad is that the kreef overcatch has resulted in a huge knock on recreationals.

It does not help to take swipes at scientists. If you say that they are wrong then it means that there is more uncertainty and management should be even more conservative.

We've only count one net at Klein vishoek. So 5 rights holders and 1 interim relief site.

Macassar - 1

Muizenberg to Strandfontein - 2

Fish Hoek to Smits -  2

Interim relief at Klein Vishoek- 1 (Includng Achmat, Albertyn and Cotton)

What nets are we missing?

Strandwolf you used to rant about hake trawling until it was discovered your Cosatu fishing desk was actually a shareholder in hake trawl company that was poaching and the vessel was seized. You appear to have gone quiet about this.

Your hand is so deep down the cookie jar that i for one do not trust you to make an unbiased objective opinion on anything related to sustainable fisheries.

Now i am wondering did they do this because you determined the hake stocks were better than the scientists would have us believe?

Aaahhh Strikerpro!

You have earned yourself a one way ticket to the Gulag. 4 legs good - 2 legs better.

COSATU was the empowerment partner of the trawling co. You will notice that round at time it became the ANC fishing desk and not the COSATU fishing desk.

I always find it disturbing that so many view the scientific community with mistrust and contempt. This is especially so when it comes to fisheries science.

Bear in mind that South Africa has a very rich and deeply involved history when one looks at fisheries science. This history stretches way back to the late 19th century with such well respected men as Prof John Gilchrist and later on Dr Cecil von Bonde regarded as highly knowledgable and practical men who were actively involved in many aspects of marine research.

Then of course we also have the world renowned JLB Smith who was not only a scientest but a keen and skilled angler.

The current group of scientests and researchers are just as well respected and I find it nothing short of insulting that so little respect is given to these individuals.

There is a well established relationship between research and most commercial fishing operations. Where does so much of the data come from?

In 1989, I was part of a research team doing a study on the rock lobster biomass off Cape Point. The local fleet was used extensively as a means of getting the required data, and I spent many days onboard Hout Bay based crayfish vessels sampling and measuring thousands of rock lobster.

A staggering amount of data has been gathered through the years by Sea Fisheries(now MCM) both on their own vessels as well as those belonging to the various fishing companies as well as private operators.

In addition to this, many of the technical staff are very well connected to various branches of the industry.

If these fishery scientests are so inept as so many believe, then who the hell is regarded as qualified to conduct the required research?

I've had the honour of fishing commercially with some very successful skippers and have met many more. Oddly enough, they seem to have little to complain about when it comes to scientests and simply get on with their job and catch fish. I guess thats why they are so successful.......

I am no scientist nor am I a commercial fisherman and I find all the contributions by the various informed members of this forum very interesting. I know next to nothing about trekking and am trying to keep an open mind on both sides of the issue while reading the various inputs.

However, from 'n simpleton's view, being passionate about fishing and the environment in general, I just want to make this one point regarding treknetting from information gathered on here:

How do you avoid "by catch"? The photo depicted in a previous thread shows a net with very small "maas". Once they start hauling in the catch, there is no way in hell the undersize ones can be released until everything is dumped on the beach. Yes, of course some rod anglers take too many or small ones which is deplorable, but if treknetters operate in full swing, can the damage by rod anglers be compared to the havoc created by netters?

Fact is, most by catch, I believe, are going to die anyway. Or am I too subjective/melodramatic?

youre not melodranatic , rods will never have the capcity to remove such a large by catch in one setting?  your points are valid.

Hi Kirk

The linefish scientists would disagree. They are pretty worried about the impact of recreational fishing.

It is uncomfortable to think that recreatioal angling has an impact but it does.

HIya jb2,

Fancy seeing you here...LoL

Everything has impact I don't think anyone disputes that fact. But if you were to stack up the numbers...in black and white I recon it would be a land slide. Now way on God's green earth that us recreational anglers do the SCALE damage as compared to commercial ventures.

Maybe you could reach into your seemingly vast and deep knowledge base to do some number crunching?

Hi JB , fancy seeing you here?

When you say linefish scientists do the not take into account the commercial linefish industry. I have fished commercially for snoek and cannot see how recreationals could compete with a fleet of commercial skiboat fishers. On a good day a 8 man boat could easily land a 1000 fish now multiply this by the number of boats on the water and the figures are staggering. I know we talking snoek here and these numbers are sustainable, but we also caught tons of Bek and tail, not to mention Kob

Just my comments and I value your input.
Over,

jb2, I can accept that recreational angling has an impact, but...how long is a piece of string?

My point is, can any fishing environment, as the one in False Bay, allow netting of such a nature (i.e. mesh size) that indiscriminatorily kill, not only the target species, but also most of the juvenile fish and/or any other species that, invariably, get trapped. This kind of wanton collateral damage, with the local resources under the kind of pressure we are all aware of, is, in my eyes, criminal.

How does it sit with you?

I think all points are valid in this thread, but my final point is that come on guys if MCM can't even police permit holders or bag limits in False bay area while their is a permit system in place what makes you think they will be able to BAN all fishing in False bay being Netting & Recreational fishing and police it? I live in Strandfontein and i can tell you on a good day with the amount of guys on the Surf or at the Pool fishing i would find it entertaining if MCM or even the police would dare try to stop the guys from fishing.... i have personally seen how MCM by while treknetters bag illegal fish and then waited to see what happens MCM being told to go fetch their carrier bag to fill with some Fresh Haarders...There is just too many irregular activities from everyone to STOP anything, so we can rant & rave but i doubt there will be any change that will make a difference where it should actually matter which is the enviroment..

Hi Meneer V D Merwe

Please get back to us so we know that you have not been harmed during a rousing rendition of "Dubul Ibunu - Kill the Boer" at the ANC fishing desk meetings.

How many nets do you count?

Please refer to the thread Save False Bay as reference as I notice there are several similar threads and most of the debate hinges only around the trekkers.

With the official Save False Bay thread in place I would simply like to point out that in the interests of False Bay as a whole we must not make this a trekker vs the rest scenario as that is only one aspect of the problems encountered in False Bay.

First of all there is a huge difference between ANC FISHING DESK and COSATU FISHING DESK. Members from COSATU FD come from all political parties and the CFD have no rights attached. Members may have but not the organization. We do not believe in the ANC FISHING DESK for various reasons.

Please proof your statement of my hand in the cookie jar.

Hi BTTB

Thanks for that but the appeal of targetting the trekkers is that it provides the potential for a quick fix to a complex problem.

Why should I wory about water abstraction in the Eastern Cape and the closure of estuary mouths when I can look at two people.

People don't want complex solutions to complex problems.
