Good Morning to all my fishing buds

Well we just returned from Pomene and what a nightmare. Please think twice before deciding on a trip to Pomene.

The last 65km sand road took us 4 to 5 hrs.The accomodation that we received was very bad,no water, toilets were blocked every second day.Fuel is a enormous problem.Road to the launching site is very bad.To take a family to Pomene is not on let me warn you.You have to provide your own gas for the stoves, your own wood for the warm water,Genie need to go along for freezing faccilities and no fuel is available. When we arrived in Massinga we filled our tanks (22 x 20ltrs) boat fuel and paid about R14 per ltr and a week later we had to endure that road back to Massinga for re fueling suddenly the fuel price went up to R18 per ltr.

Fishing went well and we caught a lot of YFT and cudas.I will post some pics of the road and the entire experience.

Regards

Hey Grupper

We camped there 2 yrs ago and I pulled a 4x4 caravan in there but I didnt think the road was to bad as long as your tyres were at the right pressure.  The fuel is expensive there thats why when we go up north we change to local currency for fuel in Maputo other wise like you said the exchange rate changes daily at the garage and you get ripped off.  It is also always good to negioate the rate before they start filling up otherwise  they can name their price afterwards.

We also had a UK couple hi-jacked between the main road and the pomene lodge. They slashed all their tyres and they had to get out and run.....they were eventually pick -up and taken to the lodge by some people on their way there.

Is that last strech just before the camp still only wide enough for one car? If someone is coming from the other direction, somebody has to reverse for kms!!!

Anyway glad to hear you at least caught some fish

Cheers

There are various lodges at Pomene, please state which one you stayed at.

We were at Pomene Lodge run by Barra Resorts about 10 years ago and it was very good then. Dissappointing if its the same place

Hi there

Yes that last 65km is a mess my boat is a cobra 500 and in some areas we had to hack bushes away to get through.Yes if there is a car coming we had to either go bushing hunting or try to reverse as they dont have reverse gears!!

@ Grupper, thanks for the heads up, I have heard that the road is bad, but accomadation wise the Barra lodge group looks your best best there in Pomene.

As for the pertol price it does not really matter if you have mets or rands. The exchange rate at the border and Maputo was at 3  and up north from Xai-Xai onwards was at 3.2.

The petrol price averaged 49-54mes per litre. Obviously the further up you went the higher which is expected. do the math 50 mets divided my 3.2 = R15.63 per litre. So the price is not the problem just that the Metical strengthened against the Rand. Last December 2010 it was at 5.5mets to the Rand. 50mets divided by 5.5 + R9.09 per litre....................... Big difference so the rand has to strengthen before we visit Mozambique again.

Hey Grupper did you travel up the 22nd of December?

Hi there

We traveled up on the 26th-Yes the exchange rate plays a big factor, but it seems to me they make there price on fuel as they wish as at that particular filling station they said to us that they transport their own fuel and all the others in town were dry as we checked them all.

Pomene Lodge self is good as far as I know, been there 2 years ago, but ohh boy what a big crappy trip.

I was in a car accident, to make it short they had to medivac me out, but a Cruser pickup needed to take me to Vulanculos. It was an 6hour trip, the roads were supper bad and wet after 3 days of rain.

I am indeed sorry to hear about your experience! Petrol - depending on the exchange rate, it will always be more than in SA (Yes, sometimes when the exchange rate is 5 mets plus to the rand it's still more than in SA) Gas - Mozambique in general suffered shortages of gas since October 2011, most of the lodges did warn their potential visitors that it would advisable to bring their own gas. Even us that lives in Maputo, we had no gas for about 6 weeks! Reverted to charcoal and I bought a small 2 plate electric stove. So, yes - we all suffer. The gas comes from SA anyway. No hot water!!! Now this - I cannot understand as it's utterly rubbish. You should name the lodge! As charcoal (Carvao) is readily available all over Moz.... very bad on Lodge's behalf!! Blocked Toilets - no excuse! Name the lodge! As it's completely unacceptable to run a business like this! Bad roads, well it's Moz - but then again the owner could have warned the visitors - stating that the roads leading to the lodge is in bad shape. I won't be surprised if it's South Africans running the lodge? (BTW - I am South African) - as many of them took their retirement or financial packages and think its easy to run a lodge and make millions. It's people like this that gives the South Africans in the tourist industry in Mozambique a bad name! Case Closed! - Name the lodge!

Good Morning

I COULDNT AGREE MORE.Could you perhaps assist as i want to contact some authority in MZ and bring this under their attention. It is in some cases us South Africans that rips our own people off just to make a buck or two and by doing so give Mz A BAD NAME and leave a sour taste in your mouth. We paid R25K for basic just a hard bed.The lodge is privately owened in the CASA REI development.Casa Oito. These people take money out of MZ and do not invest back into the area.Would like to meet you as im use to travelling quite a lot to MZ.Maybe im wrong but MZ is still wonderfull but unfortunately some people mess it up.

@ Grupper - Sorry for the late reply, will get back to you soonest via PM, I need the following info so long...did you do a payment to a SA Bank prior to your departure? Did they give you a proper receipt, what I mean with the right ammount you paid? Sometimes these owners have 2 receipt chits/slips...so ja you got a point.

25K, you could have had such a nice holiday for that ammount, send me names ect via PM...

Might take time, but I will try my best.

Been there 3 times in the past two years from East Cape. Towed a 5,2m cat. Pomene road was always 4X4 only which kept out crowds. Fishing, in my opinion has been disappointing. Lagoon full of gillnets, longlines off the point, and commercial boats from Inhambane fishing at night with lights. Chinese invasion has meant a market for fish, shark fin, etc, and I'm sure they are suppling the locals with massive new nets for estuaries, etc. Very sad.
I knew Pomene and the old hotel from the 1970's - it was a fishing paradise.
