Not maening to stir the pot, but there is a big differance between buying a rat to feed your snake and selling platties...

The difference is the law. it is not illegal to sell rats and mice. what you do with them is your business. It is however not legal to sell certain species without a permit and i think platteis are one of them. so thats the issue. the not having a permit part. Maybe the spca came across in the wrong way in reporting the artical.

Anyway, it is not legal to use live bait in south africa, except in the province of KZN. Each province has its own nature conservation laws which differ greatly.

I don't use them as live bait, that's unthinkable.....I first step on them........

Not allowed to use them in competitive angling anymore, not even when you kill them first.

I cannot belive people get so riled up about a frog! (clawed frog or Xenopus laevis to be exact) Do scrap bookers or stamp collectors consider all the tree's that died for them to enjoy their hobby? No mention of using day old chicks?

The last comment by 100% African does pose an interesting position though. So it is not okay to sell frogs without a permit (seems to be illegal) but I can take as many as I like from my fish pond at home (not sure how they got in there) and feed them to the fishes, no problem? I recall reading somewhere that it is allowed to use natural baits for catching fish. I would class a frog as natural so I don't see a problem with it. If the comment then is that they can only be used dead, thats where the mallet and the foot come in (enjoyed the mallet and "step on" jokes, still LMFAO)Platties were actually used for pregnancy tests way back when (injected with female urine - the hormones associated with pregnancy triggered spawning in the frog). Bet that was okay at the time.

I agree that proper measures should be taken to ensure the frogs are properly accomodated and fed in capitivity. That way they are fatter and more juicy come fishing time! Jokes aside, as long as it is done responsibly and without unnecessary waste, I do not see a problem with it.

Hi everyone,

not a lot op people know or realise is that the spca is a "Donation" funded org, that means that a large part of there funding come from donations from the general public, how do you get more moola from the greenies? Easy make sure you are in the headlines........ So it's got nothing to do with the platties, it's all about money.

I was on the wildlife forum, appointed by government that wrote the new 2007 Tops legislation, Spca and some others where represented as well. My personal opinion, they are a bunch of wackows........ but that’s just me....

Yes fish heads are very good but not as good a a plattie when drifting off a boat. What will they say to cutting a live fishes head off LOL.

If the plattie is A protected species then the guy thats breeding them is doing nature A favour by multiplying there numbers and there by encouraging people to rather buy platties in his shop rather then to take the time and effort to catch one or two in there natural habitat. Makes 100% sense to me.

Personall I won't use a poor frog as bait, those that does will go to hell for that :-D

If these frogs weren't bred like they are then there would not even be a fraction of their quantities, same with earth worms. Home breeding defenately ensures the species lives on, so it's not that bad. I think it should be done with other animals that faces extinction, we'll have their number up in no time. Although it may be difficult to get the live rhino on the hook...

Being poor and having a family to feed does not qualify you to bugger the few resources up more than it is already screwed up. I'm tired of hearing that excuse. If philip is too lazy to find a job then he can die (with the bait frogs), it does not qualify him to destroy the rest of the water and fish by putting out gill nets. We all know how responsible they are by leaving the nets unattended in the water resulting in many rotten fish in it. Maar moenie warrie nie die ander man hy sal agter my gat kom regmaak.

As for the frog bait users, day old chick are much better bait for barbel, I'll bet you ! Btw, these day old chick are chicks that died for various reasons. It is not live and well chicks we murder to become bait. You can fish with them or they become pig food, but more dead than they already are they won't get. Dead, deader, deadest.

Platties drown in any case after a while in the water - especially after it fell it's wind out when you cast it in there.

It seems that shop wanted to make a killing keeping 2000 frogs eh !

Ek het by daai berig kommentaar gelewer.
