I hear you on the visibility from boats when in swell. A possible solution is to take a leaf from the quad bikers (yes i find some of them annoying as well) but you often see on building sites, the quad bikes are all fitted with flags on a pole. The extra height makes it just a bit easier to see when as a paddler you are in the trough.
