GARMIN - Appauling Service

I Have had enough of our local suppliers and am having "RANT" today

My Garmin Fishfinder got water in it -"Partially" my fault as I accidently blasted it with the HP washer. I hasten to add that it still works No Problems.

I openend it up just to dry it out before damage is caused by moisture.

In the process of opening the casing I broke a plastic retaining nut where the fishfinder plugs in that retains the the cable in a stable and steady spot.

I send them an e-mail requesting if they could please post me a replacement nut (I mean really what does one of these cost - 50c.)

Anyways I will post the reply I get from them a bit further down.

They say I need to take it to an agent and pay for it to be sent in for a service - R250 to replace a plastic nut - come on guys this is ridiculous. I was happy to pay R50 for the part and postage. :)

They also mentioned I could bring it to their offices in North Riding and if it was out of Warranty I would have to pay a service fee. What does it cost me to go during office hours to JHB in terms of Petrol Time and money from Pretoria and have to pay a service fee atop this all...... Sorry gent not acceptable.

So if anyone has an old broke Garmin I am looking for a Plastic nut. Garmin SA did not even have the decency to comeback to me after the intial e-mail and response...

Sorry I see there are Terms attached to the bottom of their e-mail so I cannot publish the e-mail. E-mail sent early June 2009

I will send them the link anyway's.

Anyone else had similar experince's with GARMIN SA

Hi Ryan,

This might be a longshot but phone Skiffy on 011-3148750.

If they have one I will pick it up and bring it with me.

All you need is size and what kind of thread.

They will give you one for free.

I was also just refered to a distributor for retailing Garmin, I can also enquire for you?
Is there a specific model or part number, or can I just send them your picture (The one where you cast 170m and bend that stick like a wip)?

Thanks Andries,

I think the plastic nut is pretty much standard throughout all their product range.

But I have a Garmin 140.
If you still require the Serial no's let me know and I will drop you a PM with them on.

I just think when you pay 2k for a product you would expect a bit better response from the Agents.

BM Tried Skiffy - no such luck

Thanks bud

Guess I am going to purchase from the states again.

Ryan, write a complaint to Garmin EU or Garmin US, I am not sure who supplies SA. They tend to sort their SA agents out about bad service. Might save us all from future problems and you may very well expect a letter of apology, which you can then post here on SL.

Worked for Outdoor Warehouse for a short while and had a customer with a complaint, we received alot of positive response from Garmin.

Hi Ryan

I have a Garmin 80 that still have this nut on that you can take. The transducer went into the prop. I tried to get a new transducer but the price was so high that I rather went for a new fishfinder. I now have a new Humminbird colour with GPS for about R 4 400 on it way from the USA.::S

Avnic trading suck. I had shocking service from them in the past. A hand held broke down and was sent in under warrantee. All the excuses int he book, eventually bought a new one. I tried the USA route on a Lowrance, but had 2 breakdowns, one due to damage caused by theft and recovery, and decided not worth that route either. Now buy Lowrance from SA, pay a premium, but the aftrer slaes service is 1 million times garmin/ AVnic

Ryan please send an email to the european offices.

Tom Tom has started to give Garmin SERIOUS competition overseas, not neccesarily in fishfinders but in general. SA is one of the few countries where everyone is still GARMIN crazy. Avnic is a "master dealership" so they feel the are above anyone else.

Also GARMIN SA is primarily concerned with their golden goose Makro, and the rest is just extra cash.

Tom Tom providing free map upgrades etc, expect Garmin to start singing a new tune soon...

Hiya Ryan.
No response from the leads that were given to me either.
Looks bleak to get involved with Garmin at this time?

Marco was able to help me resolve this Problem.
Will still take this up with Garmin Europe.
Marthin any chance you would have a link or a contact ADDY for Garmin Europe?
