galjoen fishing

hi guys.

first of all i am a struggling galjoen angler. i never catch more than two galjoen per season. when i do get lucky i always seem to catch the smaller specimen. and whenever i catch one, i wouldnt get another bite for the rest of the day. don't they feed in large shoals? or am i doing something wrong? what can i do to catch bigger gallies and improve my success rate?

Lots of questions can be asked here. What bait you use?(preparation and tipe of bait) How does your trace look?(hook size, trace length) How does the area look where you fish?(terrain and water colour) What distance do you cast? The answer to most of these questions come with time and experience you gain whilst fishing. You already took two steps in the right direction by asking questions and joining Sealine. Please post answers to the questions above and we will gladly assist where we can.

you sometimes get small shoals of only 3 or 4 fish and they spook easy, so if you haul one out they might go off the bite,but it's usually not to long before they're back...or try moving to a different spot.

west coast anler needs serious help , i am a succesful competative angler for a few years now but the elusive galjoen i have yet to catch , i have tried on the west coast but had one on the line for a short time then he was off, i am very desperate i have collected wonder worm and have them in salt in the deep freezer , can some one assist this week end in the false bay area i am off to switzerland on monday and will be in Cape town over the week end from maybe sat afternoon ,Please help DESPERATE

False Bay side,well more the Kommetjie side of the area,drive towards Kommetjie and drive over the montain,along the way you will see a long white beach and a crayfish factory,from there all along the coast to as far as Scrbough you will see some good place's to fish,these spots I have got some nice size,on white mussel,red bait(buried and nice and smelly)coral worm and wonder worm.Or if you want you can fish behind the lighthouse,or at Soetwater,all on the same bait as mentioned...tite lines Don...

Fish these spots at the high tide Don,and along the beach you can get white mussel,but the fish seem to like the more mature bait..take spark plugs with you as you will loose a lot of sinkers... belive me I know..lol

went fishing sunday past so wont make any promises about this sunday but if you fishing the false bay coast some places to try is wolfgat,must take the macassar route on baden powell drive,white water is what you must remember when targetting them,prawn and bloodworm is a must,can try there for gallie or at monwabisi,i caught gallie here before and you can pump in the pool for prawn and the odd bloodworm and stand on the wall there and try for gallie,or if you in the strand one place to try and where i caught gallie before is at harmony park,facing the pool on the inside of the poles and cast to the last pole and slightly to the left of it,i caught big blacktail here also before,hope this helps

why so silent loomisx -surely id expected more gen from your side being the pro , but then again i know galjoen fishing being so secretive , everyone looks out for their own interest , i wonder how the rest of the guys would feel if Oom Daisy , wayne , myself held back n the west coast !

@Don- i tried the whole off last season but didnt land a single galjoen. i definately going to make a plan on getting one this season. my uncle gaught a couple of size gallies in the veldrift river mouth of the jetty with the little light house. keep me posted with regards to sunday im keen. tight lines PS: how's your ski?

Fantastic enjoying every moment she is quite stable aswell , been out twice and have a few big crays to show already check the last thread on the paddle ski forum (large guy large ski)did you r uncle get those gallies recently at veldrift?

Hey chaps. Some nice galjoen is also coming out at Macassar. There are nice reefs that you can get to. Over the weekends, there will always be guys fishing.(the safety in numbers thing) Try to have a spread when it comes to your baits, "matured" redbait, white mussel, moonshine worm, wonderworm, bloodworm. you don't always have to have all the baits mentioned, because sometimes all they want is vrot redbait. This pic was the result of some snotty redbait, causing the fish to try and pull the rod from my hands!! Fish was caught yesterday morning.::H

Don my advice and i havent caught a gallie in ages... get your hands on the vrottest redbait you can find. Even bettr if some of it's going purple. That and any form of worm if you can but if ur just going for a morning and i could only get one bait redbait would be it. Takes half the peckers out the picture.

At wolfgat i've seen big ones come out. At strandfontein pavillion at lowtide, you stop right where broken road starts, go down the stairs, wade in and cast. There's a pic somewhere i have up i'll check if i can find it. I've watched guys make 2 casts each, with 2 fat galjoen each.

Then the cliffs at Gordon's bay past the steenbras river mouth but definately take a buddy with.

I don't know the other side of false bay at all but have heard a place called misty cliffs mentioned.

And then this time of year between Dwarskersbos and Veldrif there are some reefs at the 3rd turnoff heading from Veldrif. If the galjoen are there you'll catch your bag limit in 2 casts, but you need those fat sandprawns u get at the beach at Dwarskersbos.

I don't realy see myself as a pro on Galjoen fishing but as I told Marthin in a pm send me your number and if we plan a trip in False Bay I will give you enough warning to start collecting your bait. The reason why I dont talk to much about Galjoen fishing is because I am preparing for my bowhunting trip end of April. I practise every Saturday resulting in me not having the time to take out bait to go fishing on a Sunday. No bait no fishing.

The two bait I would say is a must is wonderwurm and redbait. At this stage the Gallies is not worried if it is slightly vrot or vrot. We caught 24 Gallies on the first day of this season with mostly fresh redbait cut out whilst fishing on the reef at Macasar. I always carry mussel(white) and tiger prawns as a variety.

My traces is a short sinkerline +- 12kg and a longer hook trace +-17kg. The reason being is when you pull your line up to the reef your hook does not hit the reef first.

Now I have spilt most of the beans. Any other questions ask.

ps. To solve the problem of me not fishing you take out the bait :lol:1

Hey Angler 1 ,

Macassar between Aasbankies and Blokhuis is producing good sized fish at the moment , in fact i caught 2 fish of 45cms and 37 cms yesterday afternoon in quick succession on fresh prawn pumped in the tidal pool at Monwabisi.

Some elderly gentlemen (3) also caught their quota next to us.

The fish went off the bite when the tide dropped later in the day.

Frozen white mussel also works well should you not be able to get your hands on some worm or prawn.

The fish usually feeds sporadically so you need to leave your bait and relax , checking it every now and then.

ps. Do not cast very far!!!

Next time we'll chat about preparing the fish for the feast.

I am just a beginner surf angler myself, and i fish in Namibia where no worms are allowed. Over here we use white mussel and red bait to catch that fish. I got a couple of small ones (see photo) using white mussel, but strangely they were not near the rocks at all. I used a light freshwater 3m. rod, a small 3/0 hook and a braided line (which helps to feel even the slightest nibble on the hook). I've been told by a pro, that galjoen is a vicious feeder and will clean the hook in no time, so i thought i'll try small hooks.
One more thing, casting with a cheap freshwater telescopic rod sucks, and in a strong wind in the face conditions the distance would be no more than 30 meters at best.

In Namibia galjoen is a sought after fish and everyone seems to love their taste, which i am still to discover. But to give you an idea about galjoen’s value, in a hotel in Hentiesbaai when enquiring about the availability of the fish for a dinner i was offered a 1kg frozen galjoen for 400 rand. Wow! They are hard to catch, but that pricing is an overkill.
