Hi All

I was just wondering,

Angling is such a big sport and Industry in our country and over the world.

To me it's more than just a hobby, I see it as a passion and even though I can't spend every weekend next to the water, it's something I will do for the rest of my life and I am hoping to teach my kids the same passion and that they will enjoy it just as much as I do.

My question to all sealiners is :

Which one do you enjoy / practice the most, if not even both?

I personally like both but seeing that I stay inland and that I can't just go down to the coast every month, freshwater angling is my passion.

As I come from a farm and did not live exactly close to the ocean, my experience in fishing is fresh water.

Carp, bass, trout etc. In dams and rivers.

Having done all that in my younger years and the fact that I now live next to the ocean, the excitement for me now lies in Saltwater Fishing.
Its new and there are SO MANY MORE varieties out there to attempt to catch.

Look, if I have the opportunity to go Tiger Fishing or Peacock Bass fishing for instance, I would be ALL OVER IT!

I grew up on the west coast and my dad was a commersial fisherman. I remember my dad always taking me out on the boat since I was 6years old catching snoek, yellowtail and hotties....Hand line style :). I remember the days trawling for that yellowtail in the North westerlies around Dassen island. What a rush..The little guy I was always had to pull in the fish twice.

Then when I was about 15 we moved to Limpopo and had no guidance in freshwater. So best method was to sell my bicycle and buy myself new rods. Here we go, boesman strop and erties. Started out kurpertjies, then bass and then carp and barbel fever hit me. Needless to say, I got the hang of it and had some great success in double figures on carp and barbel. Then I found myself trying to be a "spesie hengelaar". That first 10kg+ carp will always be embedded in your brain.

12years later I find myself on the west coast again.... What was the first thing on the agenda?? Get new rod, reel, lisence and talk to the locals. Even have my kayak on the way and will be delivered tomorrow. A month and a half later, still on a blank, still going fishing in the wee hours of the morning, waking up before the sunrise, rushing home to shower then to work. All while in the back of your mind telling yourself..."Tomorrow is a new day and tomorrow you will be hook on".

I believe fishing is a sport as whole and in our subconcious minds it's all about relaxing (until the reel spool goes in overdrive) and having fun in the outdoors. We as fisherman are always up for a challenge.

Great question and looking forward to the other replies ((goodp_

I enjoy both.

Freshwater I prefer targeting Big barbel and Tiger fish(I catch the rest too) but prefer these two.

Coastal, I nowadays prefer targeting edibles.

Fishing is a great sport and I enjoy mostly just being out there in nature enjoying this privilege with my family.

Give me any fishing & I will take it!
From stalking brook trout in a tiny welsh stream to plugging for GT off a beach in Moz.
Down here my bread & butter is specimen carp (land of plenty as no-one fishes for them other than our small band of brothers) and snapper/shark off the boat over the warm months.
Holidays always have a fishy flavour mixed into it though! Could be bass whilst on holiday in SA or Barramundi up in the Northern Territory.
A line in the water & the chance of a scaly friend makes me a happy man.

I must admit that nowadays I prefer freshwater. My reason is that I never take fish and I do it purely as a means of relaxation or just getting out.
Not all carp give a good fight but when you use super light tackle ( where there is no grass) and light tackle for bass you can get just as much enjoyment.
