Flying with jigs

@limpopoking yeah bud i got stopped in Muscat in Oman by security because they thought i had real crabs in my lure bag , when i took them out and he saw they rubber he took one , ran off and called all his mates over to have a look. they thought they where real and could not believe they where made from rubber and hard plastic haha. they had a good chuckle.

It depends a lot on the mood of the staff on the day. In my early travel days I got away with lures and reels in my hand luggage a couple of times, then one day I got stuck, had to repack all my gear and ended up missing a flight as a result. Definitely not worth the risk, rather check in all your gear, most airlines are a lot more strict these days anyway.
Mada are definitely sticky when it comes to reels or hookless lures in hand luggage. I pack for mada as follows:
20kg check in: Poppers, reels (in a plastic box(big jim type) which goes into my bag for extra protection), terminal tackle, leaders, tools, accessories - towel and a jacket to cushion all the gear
Rod tube: given that they allow 15kg on the tube, I insert a smaller pvc pipe into my rod tube (slightly longer than than my rods) and jam the pvc tube full of jigs... I wrap my rods around this. When you land in Tana - go to the Air Mada counter at international departures to pay for the tube for your connecting flight - it was around $30 for the extra 15kg the last time I flew

Honestly every answer given is 100% correct, although different. I have flown all over the world with Line / Hooks / Lures.
Sometimes they allow you sometimes NOT, (same airline), in Brasil/Africa - they could not care less...300mm to 400mm size (length) vertjigs, no worries, I have picked up hassles from Durban to Jozi (SAA)...
OK, I know what you aiming at, as it's usually an item with weight and now you want to "gain some weight" by putting it on your "carry ons" Hence you can load more stuff in the "checked items" - The problem is sometimes once you checked your stuff, it's difficult for them or a nasty Nazi type lady might refuse to "recall" your checked bag - should they have "red carded" on the carry on idea. What do you do then with the jigs???...Call a friend? So it's a gamble, I also do understand why you want to take your own, simply it's available, and of course cheaper in SA, you pay thru your ass for stuff in Mauritius + Seychelles = Ask me !
So do this, why don't you contact the airline, and explain your story, thus getting a yay or nay, before hand?
