Fly fishing around Alma.

Good Day Everyone,

Just moved to limpopo, working on a farm just south of Alma. We have a piece of the sand river flowing through the farm with quite a bit of water. Has anyone fished that river? and what is in there ? I caught a few large barbel on my 5 weight rod, and a bass but winter isn't making it easy. Never tried to catch yellowish on fly so a few advices would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Kenny just make sure if there are any Crocs in the river. They can be in strange places? Limpopo region is known for Crocs and Hippos.

Just be careful.

The river in that area would hold the following species:

Largescale Yellowfish
Smallscale Yellowfish
Blue Kurper
Redbreast Kurper
Sharptooth Catfish
Carp

In these slow flowing rivers you can try using blood worms (Try more that one fly) with a slow retrieve on the bottom. Most of the species mentioned above will take this fly. Dry fly can also be effective if you can sight fish, especially for redbreast.
