Floating time of floaties getoets

Werner. The floats sold by MG, Carp World, Supercast, champion and one or 2 other smaller dealers are same floats from the same manufacturer and this I know as I am the ditributor. they also do come from the same plant as Stephensons do.

Floaties don't have to Float to work, in fact many times it's better if they don't float.

How can I sat this. well a hook, dough and floatie combination that just doesn't float becomes what the specimen anglers would call a critically balanced bait. In outher words it's so light it could just about float but doesn't

So why is this a good thing? Carp feed by inhaling food and sand of the bottom and then filter it out through the gills with food passing to the gullet and waste ejected through the gills.

If the fish is eating the mielebom on te ground it inhalse the bomb and in the process the Zero weight bait (criticaly balanced) flows with the water into the fishes mouth and it's on.

With 90% of our venues there is no grass that you have to float your bait over.

The other thing is your choice of hook for carp fishing.

The 9555 is a baitholder hook with a heavy guage. it is designed with 2 barbs on the shank to hold meaty baits in place and is a stout hook designed for hard strikes into boney mouths of fish such as sea fish or Kurper.

It's not a hook I would at all recommend for carp fishing. The weight of the hook is not the main reason for it not floating the hook, it's the guage of the hook and the amount of damage it does to the porous center of the floatie, causing arelease of air out of the sponge like interior.

If you want to flat the #8 or #6 9555 then you should use 2 or 3 small flaoties or one big one.

We did some tests with a soft homogeneous foam to test hook setting of various hooks using a calabrated testing apparatus and found that the

#8 9555 took 74gr of constant pressure to set until the barb was buried (it is a barb that protrudes a long way)

#1 Daichi took 22gr
#10 cutting blade took 20gr
#10 Mustad ultrapoint took 24gr to set.

Given that the way we fish you need a hook that will set when the fish runs. the carp sepcific ooks set on or around the weight of an M1 the 9555 needs about a P5 to set.

For competitive fishing I wouldn't go more than a #1 hook (possibly #2)

For social or recreational fishin for bigger fish I would still steer away from the 9555 as it is not designed as a Carp hook so i would go with bigger carp specific hooks. Probably a #6 or #4 (#3 or #5 Daiichi Japanese sizes)

The key is also to match the hook size to your targe species, no good competition fishing and targeting 300gr fish with a #3 hook just as it's a waste of time targeting 5kg+ fish with a 0.8.

I fish
#14 (0.5) for muddies and carp to 750gr
#12 (#0.8) for carp 500 - 2kg
#10 (#1) for Carp 1-3kg
#6 (#3) for carp averaging 3kg and up

In traditional bank angling you don't need a float that floats for longer than 1 hour as it's then time to rebait.

When you want a high floating bait then I put on 2 comp floaties and they float a #1 for hours on end but you seldom want the bait floating high.

At this weekend's league I caught all my carp on a #1 with 2 Infamous floaties on, floating above the bol and the muddies I go on a tiny dough on a 0.5.

Thank you Enigma, this is some useful (great) info. I am currently fishing with a gly rietvlei; M1 sinker would it be ok to use the Daichi # 2 hook with this type of trace?

Hi Wernerbloem

I use that trace with Daichi # 2 and works very well for me . Hooklinks are about 15 to 20 cm depending where you fishing if the bottom of the dam or river is soft etc .

Thanks
