Great idea.
I have been wondering about this topic however. Is there not a risk of getting burnt off if your sinker sits too tightly in the sand and you get a big pull?And then on the other hand, it is just so much easier if you slide bigger baits when you can pull the line real tight without dislodging the sinker. Why do guys use up to 12 ounce sinkers? Is it to "load the big guns" or is it to make sure you are anchored in a rough sea. Is it a good idea to use a weaker line from your stopper ring to your sinker ? I use 8 and 9 ounce only.

I recently watched the Black fin DVD on slide fishing in the sinker section Brian Rapson gave a very good pratical illustration on what grab sinkers to use where and when.
It video clearly shows the effect of a longer boom on a grab sinker. I know that many of the Cape Town chaps use these grab sinkers with long booms because Hooked showed me one when I recently fished with him at Robberg.
I tried the usual PE tackle shops without any luck and settled on making my own to test. I used a section of 'blou draad' and pliers. I drive an old FORD so I always have these handy LoL!
Watch the Black Fin DVD, you will be amazed how simple it is to anchor a grapnel, providing you make the right choice.

the ones with a long shank/boom work the best, they set instantly, so you can get your slide in faster!!
The long boom grapnels with thick wire grab the best. Think of it acting in the same manner as an anchor chain in ski boating.
Ants, the tighter you keep your line while sliding the better, it helps the slide clip to move towards your O ring stopper a lot easier, it also lessens the chance of your slide trace from wrapping aroung your main line. This will definately result in a burn off. Another very important trick to consider is to ensure that your slide get all the way to your O ring by shaking your rod until you are confident it has reached its O ring.
If however you get a pick up before the slide is at the O ring. DO NOT STRIKE. It will result in a burn off. Simply lower your rod to face your line entering the water and wind your line in. Invariably you will feel the line get very 'heavy', and thus know that the slide clip has reached the O ring. I hope this helps

Ok guys, these are my 9 ounce sinkers I made myself, using moulds bought from oom Dup. Aren't they pretty..?
I even sandblasted them to take the "bling" off . Are they according to specs..? or should the "grapnel wires" be longer?
My boom is made of 1.6mm and the grapnel wires 2mm

That's a bute Ants. Well done man. Mine looks very similar, but i use 2mm wire for the graps and 1.6mm stainless for the boom. I further make a clip, so i can clip my sinker to the O ring, so i don't cast the sinker snood of, resulting in a lost sinker. Some of my sinkers i also ad a 3/4oz ball sinker to the boom so it coveres it self in the sand quicker.
