HI GUYS

 

JUST TRYING TO FIND OUT ABT FISHING WITH A LIVE BAIT

IS THIS METHOD OF CAPTURE FOR EDIBLE OR INEDIBLE FISH LEGAL

COS THE WAY I SEE IT IF WE USE AN UNDERSIZE FISH FOR BAIT IT JUS AS GOOD AS

BAGGING AN UNDIE :X

I,VE SEEN GUYS USE SMALLER SHARKS,SHADS,ETC TO CATCHER MONSTER SHARKS ETC

BUT WHAT GIVE US FISHERMAN THE RIGHT TO KILL THIS SHARK,

JUST FOR THE FUN AND TAG N RELEASE THEN THE GUYS WHO FISH THIS METHOD

ARE JUST AS GUILTY AS THOSE WHO REMOVE UNDERSIZE FISH,

i use undersize live bait to catch my fish and all the years no problems except when i was fishing for a club i had to obey the legal limits.now i dnt fish for clubs as they tell you what fish to target and where to fish and the story with hooks its just ridiculous.you see i used under size shad to target garrick and couta and if i never had i pull the shad was returned,and if i caught a fish it would also be released so there was no harm with that i suppose.

You make a good point but there is alot to consider when using live bait.Firstly it is ileagal to use undersize fish as live bait eg:SHAD.Sometimes ish like garrick only feed on the smaller bait fish like the small shad so alot of fisherman tend to diobey the rules when it comes to this.

Yes you are right we are breaking the rules,but we are in a catch 22 position,if we dont use the shad we won't get pulls and the shad that are feeding in that area are going to inevitably get chowed anyway.So in my opinion if we take care to look after the live bait like shad and make sure to return the fish unharmed if we do not use it then in mt opinion yes go for it.Now remeber im saying this is my opinion not the law so dont take my word as the bibles truth..

What i do is especially when the garrick are running thick and fast i usually take a small baby plastic pool down to the beach with me.Its perfect for keeping these small shad and live bait fesh and healthy they done get hurt because they have enough room to swim and so on.

When im done i then release the fish with no troubles at all.My point is that sometimes we have to think about reality,and the reality of this fact is, is that these so called live baits that we use are inevitably going to become a bigger fish or sharks meal anyway so why not use these smaller fish to get ourselves or reward ourselves with a better catch.

Taking home of undersize fish is ileagal and futile because undersize fish are to small and boney to be eaten,so that is why its useless taking it home it doesnt make sense or serve any purpose.With the live bait you can at least give yourself a chance to make good use of it and hopefully catch something worth while even for the table..

I think in my opinion it can be aceptable to use these fish but only for the sole purpose os catching something worth while and not just to destroy and end a life.Taking the utmost care of your live bait and being responsable with the safe return of any unused live bait will be your responsability.

when and if i catch a smallish shad, i will use it either as live bait or as fillets for bigger fish,but this will only be one, the others get returned to the water unharmed.

technically speaking,that fish might just get chowed in any case by a bigger fish,but then again maybe not, but most times i have been fortunate with getting pulls on the smaller bait fish.

Hi Guys

Generally the legal system work on the principle on intent..the legal term being "mens rea" which means criminal intent. Althought the marine laws stipulate certain conditions the fact that you take a single shad ( small ) for live bait and are abusing the system ..this does not necessary make you guilty of criminal intent...therefore most parks board will leave you alone.

However this does mean you can take 3/4 keep in a pool alongside you for bait. In every situation there are situations and intent. Therefore if your intention is not to commit a crime then most law enforcement agents will look at the offence lightly.

unless you gona release it,i fill my live bait pool full of shad when the big fish are biting,20 30 shad and use them for livebait,and release the rest after i leave,who can prove the shad are mine anyway.if the garrick arte chowin i catch and chuck them in the tidal pool and when i leave i tack the biggest 1 if i feel like it,and release the rest.i do the same in sardine season,i net sardines and chuck a couple of nets in the tidal pool and let the rest of the anglers use also.but handle all fish with care.

Hi Guys

What i experienced with live bait.Mullets the best except Live Mackriel.

I can tell u guys not even 2 minutes ,in about 15minutes we had 4-5 pickups.

what advice i can give to competition anglers ,And you going for weight,go for mackriel. The best specially in East Cape area.

my exsperice in this game.

First let your bait go,fish will pick it up and run ,pick the rod up and flix it back ,not to hard.then you fish is hook.

heres 1 for gamefish,just add a treble in the back to increase your chances as they hit the bait hard and fast

i hook my live bait differently. one hook through the top lip so that the fish can still breathe,and one hook just under the dorsal fine,so that the fish swims away from the tension.
