And so we move closer to the windy season.

August is known for a windy time in St. Lucia.
This is also a seasons changing indicator
The north easterly winds are well known in st lucia.
it will keep the browner water at bay, but it will also assist in the greener water coming in closer due to a upwelling being caused.

this upwelling brings along plenty of grass which is obviously food for some species.

so plenty to look out for.

side wash:
northerly winds do not cause any side wash effects.
maybe after 6x days of 50km/h winds, a possible side wash could develop, but this is not a common aspect.

the southern winds, do create havoc and side wash/ strong currents are more prevalent.

Your high tide and low tide chart for the month of August 2022.
And just like that, the August winds started to blow today up here in Gauteng.

Im back, jeeslike.

Its been a while since my last update.
Its been a frustrating time, fishing wise.

It started off good, but has since been a gamble.
water is warm already and mouth is still open.

time for the boat to start doing the work, the beach fishing is hard work, lol

Time for a update on this tread.
Its been a while since i logged in and i need to get around the new software program for Sealine.
Many things has happened since my last log in.
many fishing trips have come and gone.
St Lucia is still there.
Its still the safest place to fish in South Africa.
The mouth is still open.
Currently the shad are wild and the garrick are feeding, including the salmons.
This time of the year, is peak season to fish St. Lucia.

So hopefully i can give a update or two.
stay tuned.

Well, lets look at some pictures:
these are from the newest backwards as i need to do some updates.

So my son is currently at St Lucia.
Shad are coming out in numbers.
Garrick and salmon are being caught everyday.
This is all in the last 5 days of fishing 6 August till now 11 august 2023.
its clear that he has paid attention in the angling class i gave him.
stay tuned

So we had another trip down to st lucia.
it was fun as always.
had some lekker kob catches, a garrick on a free swimming shad.
shad were not thick in the area we fished.
Patric Ellis got a big GT of 48,9kg, when it was not returned to the ocean is not clear. the fight did last around 2 hours.
So, lekker fun in the sun!!

So i have been free swimming some shad.
Its a facet i started liking more and more.
There is much more to learn when you compare it to sliding live bait.
in any case.
This is my 2nd garrick on a free swimming shad.
honestly, im not impressed with the garricks. they are poor feeders and poor fighters.

i will see that i dot it down on a new tread, then we can have some views and input on this type of fishing.

Please do a thread on the free swimming of baitfish, not something we do much here in the Cape, but if you reed the old books the guys with the Scarborough/KP reels use to swim bait quite often since they didn't slide and couldn't (didn't need to) cast the livies out. There is a legendary video of I think African Fishing Safari in the early 90s where the guy swims a springer of the beach and hooks up with a blacktip on his KP using his hat to brake the reel.

On the leeries fighting ability it really depends on the tackle, a fair size leerie on light-medium tackle gives a good account of it self and because they are clean fighters you can really target them on quite light tackle. I guess your problem up there are the other fish/sharks that may pick up your bait and smoke you if the tackle is too light.

Hey mnr. Im busy with just that, how to do it, what is needed, all the aspects.
so putting it all together.

leeries.......only the 11kg and 16kg gave a good performance of themselves.
but the smaller ones are really poor.
even if tackle was "too heavy" one would expect much more from them.
but thats just fishing.
