Wow..epic..

Tell those leeries to come home, shad season over now..we are bored down south. Ja lekker man

That geet must have made you poep bricks on the exceler..Nicely done..that thin rod has a super backbone though,if you watch the high stick you can pull as hard as you can on 30lb line. Landed all sorts of stuff on mine, fish around ten kg mark the fights are a bit touch and go though..You must have enjoyed that one!

it was indeed a epic fight!!!
10 minutes in total.
what a rush it was.
when it starts making off running for the bricks, its either hold tight or have tear drops running.

lucky for me he did not manage to get to 2x rocks which are close by.
he made a beeline for the back line.

the 2nd one I lost was much closer to the rocks.
on this one I upped the drag much more!!!!
that's why I think the hook pulled.

this ones rush was bigger and better,

it is said, that a fish can only pull a 1/3 of its weight in drag.

I don't know, but if it is true, then the 2nd one was pass the 15kg mark.....

ja dis moer lekker!!!!
die ligte gerei kan dalk werk in die toekoms.

more joy, but possibly more tears!!!!

its now done for the season. unlikely that I would get another trip in.
I need to make some money first, as my pockets are empty.

a new investment took all my cash......

The weather was terrible, not one bite, my advice to you, visit the beach early in the morning and befriend some of the locals, they are very helpful and will put you on the right track, many of them fish the bay at maphelane, but it is a bit of walking to do, tight lines

may month is not easy, so is march, april, may, and june.

it all starts around july.

when the sahd arrive, then just after them the game fish will follow.

it all depends on the sardine run at the time.

there is some good fish around.
fishing crystal clear water is where the problem lies.

if you manage to succeed in crystal clear water, then you will succeed in any place along the south African coast line

Hi Pottie

When you slide for the Gt's with live baits in St Lucia/Vidal, do you use any steel? What leader do you use?

Hi there.

Yes, the Umfolozi is in flood. All going into the estuary thankfully.

Haven't heard of anything coming out of the estuary in ages. Water mostly fresh. Even heard of tilapia and catfish coming out but never seen them myself.

I, with all true fishermen, have been hoping for years that the estuary will breach. Maybe this year....

if you look at this picture, then you will see that even if the umfolozi came down in flood, it will not cause the mouth to breech.

that flow of water "energy" just stops when the small channeled water in that small river goes into a plane effect.

but lets keep on hoping!!!

maybe, maybe

Sadly it will take a Damoina "delux" to restore nature & the St Lucia estuary system for a good few years into the future, however will the seasons to come with the weather sustain the status & for how long before we sit with another predicament.

Question remains......what is the long term solution to a sustainable environment for fauna & flaura & to be still enjoyed by us as earhlings & keep St Lucia as a fishing/holiday mecca as before ?

so middle July 2020 we managed to check if all was still good at the flat in St Lucia.
apart from a rotten wooden picnic set on the deck, all was good.

so the picnic/ deck table set had to be replaced soon and this also created another opportunity for fishing.

we did not manage to catch some big fish as the season has just started getting into gear.
shad was present in the Maphelane bay only.
no shad was present on the St Lucia beech area.

we did have some pick ups on dead shad slid out but most were by sharks which eventually bit through the nylon traces we were using.

the locals have been catching some good numbers of pompano up north and to the south of Maphelane, some big stumpies were coming out.

the one day, after not getting anything on the dead shad i switched over to fishing sea lice/ mole crab.

the water had just started coming in "pushing tide".

the sea lice were in the water for mere minutes when the 1st rod went.
a good southern pompano was quickly landed.
i re baited the hook and made another simple cast.
another mere 5 minutes later and the rod went down again.
this time with a smaller southern pompano which was again successfully landed.

obviously other anglers took notice of it and they also started fishing sea lice.

it was not long before they too went tight with a proper flattie!!!
with a locked drag and dipping rod the anglers line soon parted.

as just like that, when it all started off so quickly, it all died down and nothing came out further.

one evening i sat at maphelane, trying for a salmon.
a live shad and dead shad was used as bait.

the dead shad was picked up by a sand shark pf about 8kg.
a short fight and it was set free again.

the bigger fish are extremely strong fighters.
when the shore is steep one really struggles to get them landed.

here the new plastic picnic set done.
it is stated that this recycled plastic chair/ picnic set will last for 60 years.
so it will likely outlive me!!!
our previous wooden set lasted for a mere 2 years.
it was sealed but somehow, it was rotten so quickly
