I'm looking for a fishfinder for a canoe.:kaykak

I plan on fishing the salty lakes, rivers, and lagoons in this area (Garden Route).

I've read the other threads here about fishfinders and some prefer one brand over another.
I don't want to spend too much either.

There's several brands and models listed here
http://www.killerdeals.co.za/product_info.php?cPath=73&products_id=47
ranging in price from about R1-2grand.
The cheapest colour model seems to be a Garmin at R2200.
You can get a `Portable case comes with suction mount transducer adapter and battery holder'
so does that mean I just put it in the canoe? How do I mount it or must I get it professionally mounted?

Here's some other makes :

Lowrance :

It seems this Eagle & Garmin model are both portable, and in another thread it was advised to stay away from portable models.
Eagle :

Garmin :

Does anyone know who does fittings around here (I'm guessing someone in George or Knysna)?

Thanks a lot for your advice!

It is really simple to fit the transducer to the hull, you can just silicone it on the inside of your ski, just make sure that there is no air between the transducer and the hull..... have mounted plenty transducers in this manner on ski boats!

Do you think the fishfinders that cost R1000 are good enough?

Do they work well even in shallow water?

Any comments anyone?
(Remember I'm planning on using this thing in a basic two man canoe, not a fishing kayak or something else in the sea, but on the local lagoons/rivers,etc so it won't be very deep).

I was thinking something like this (costs about R1500 ) :

Eagle B&W Fish Finder (4" 240x160 Lcd,Max 305M,120 Beam)

yeah fisher the eagles are good I got one. I also previously had one of the cheapies - don't waste your money you'' just end up being pissed off. read my review on killerdeals re the cheap shoite I bought. I think it was R900. that's almost a blimmin case of J&B I lost.
My advice: buy the most expensive one you can afford - that means when you get that 18 footer you are going to buy next year, you already have a fishfinder.

I use a Garmin 120 on my kayak, but to make it more portable, I ordered a suction cup for the transducer to elimanate any drilling or glue.  What you can do even further is to make a bracket to fit between the transducer and suction cup so that the suction cup gets fitted to the side of the craft and not the under side to elimate any possible damage to the transducer when going over shallow areas.  Hope it helps.  G
