its agains the law to do that. and someone said there if your do that it will mess the river up even more because the water is already so low and so far away from the sea the gtradient of the river will be messed up.

I sent that mail to Nigel, I don't think grading the mouth would save the fish but would probably shock every living thing in the river, the water in the river is unbelievably warm, easily in the low 30's and the salinity must be sky high, by opening the mouth, the shock of the freezing cold sea water would kill almost everything

What can we do then. Could we pump water in at a slow rate, this is probably very expensive though.

Get a grader to the beach, and open the mouth.
This is illegal AFAIK. Dont Estuary MCM officials have to come evaluate the river and then make a call?
What MCM officials, all the rivers are like this ,went to Kasouga 2 weeks back ,65cm cob lying dead ,the river is full of kurper.Pray for rain boys

@shellas, not river bream, they are tilapia, have seen them in the Birgha before but didn't see any last time I was there, they are a fresh water species that can live in both brackish and salt water too, we occasionally throw net them right down at the mouth in the Bonza Bay lagoon.

kurper are also know by people in E.L as muddies. they do look very similar to a river bream. and they some times have nice colours on them .

i netted alot in gonubie river on monday, and there are big ones in the nahoon river at the top. you find them in just about every dam in E.L

if you pump water into river WITHOUT opening the mouth at a steady rate, it will save all the fish. Cause there is no shock there. same as if where to rain now, fresh water enters the river anyway and the fish survive.
Its just up to the officials, but they usually just leave ALL the fish to die.
putting a little water back doesnt damage anything for the survival of our ENDANGERED cob and Grunter species.
Opening the mouth artificially will kill fish and run the river dry, no good that way. simple solution = pump some water back slowly. easy.

why do these kurper only appear in the  river when it is so low.i mean there are 100s of the buggers whereas when the river was full we did not see one.are they any good as livebait and what will take them?where do they come from?

I think you see them because the main predators are sick or dying ,so they come out to play.I might be wrong

At a certain river in E.L the 1" muddies are being used to catch spotties.River bream at times also.
