Have you compared casting distance? I have static Mags, and set on max breaking with two mags I find the distance lost to be substantial. I would imagine with 100lbs braid and a light plug it would be the same? Also what distance do you loose if you switched to a heavier lure (perhaps a spoon), when nothing is happening on the plug, and you want to give a few long casts a go. Would you agree about 30; percent?
Trevour,
Heres the break down, maybe you can spot something, I think I might have an idea,
as you saw in my first post, my testing was to first make sure i could cast the lightest plug I have , which was a 2 and 2.5 oz plug, I had to shift the magnets (2 x magnets) to max, could cast approx. 80-100m with complete control. Then i switched to a 3.5 - 4oz plug, and it casts exactly the same distance, not further or less, exactly the same distance. I am happy with this, because if I just adjust a mm back, i cannot cast the lightest plug, and with that distance Im more than happy as i do not need the distance really, I like the mags for preventing overwinds and allowing me to cast lighter plugs. The spoons, seriolas and abu, will no doubt cast further I believe, but not by making the cast harder, but with less effort, if you know what I mean.
Now the experts are going to jump in again with my next point, but i believe, the length of rod, plays a factor too in casting, I am getting the idea that a rod length is only going to allow you to cast as far as it will let you. Im only using an 11ft rod, so how much more distance would I really expect? If I took the reel off and fitted it to my surf rod, with same settings, i would loose alot of distance on the cast, and would have to probably reduce the setting, I hope this makes sense. I think, I have the reel and rod combo basically casting at the max, with what is available and with absolute control. I have fitted ceramic hybrid bearings now too, and very little change to the distance, but had to use more braking. On surf set ups, casting 4 to 6oz leads, it is far easier to control and you have a bit more forgiveness in the settings if you a are over or under, so it is a little more difficult to achieve , casting lighter with heavier, which the statics allowed me to achieve. So, it does not really matter if you have a knobby or static, they both would have had to been adjusted as such and a hundred times over until the the perfect setting is achieved. What your take on it?
And , all 3 reels, cast the same distance, with different settings, but with one common factor, the rod was the same...so it just makes me think a little that you can only cast as far as rod allows and maybe not always just the reel.
