Fire line

I would not try it, due to the fact that  i would probably cut my topshot when i cast!!

joff...you talking about berkley fireline? i use fireline with a mono leader to fluro on the hook. It casts well, sometimes burns my thumb a little bit, but that ou is so calloused now it doesnt bother me,or if i wanna wack it further i put on a glove.

Would fire line work for a leader for rock and surf fishing?

Anyone tried it?

Hey Joff,

For me, DEFINATELY NOT !!!

A leader needs to have high abrasion resistence, and braid has very low resistance as opposed to Mono. Also, a leader needs to have stretch for casting, as it absorbs the stress, no mono, more flying sinkers.

I use fireline for dropshot, and I have a fluoro leader on.

So, for rock n surf, DEFINATELY a mono leader !

Braid I believe has amazing abrasion risistance but no streatch so could work but I would stick to mono

Hey Steve,
Sorry bru but I disagree completely ! Braid compared to Mono, Mono comes out GAURANTEED !
There is a link on youtube that was posted I think by Reefman that proves this. Do a search on braid tests on the site to have a look. Sorry man, posting from my berry so can't find it right now.

I use 80lb fireline as a leader (8m) and it works fine!!! It is very abrasion resistant and I have used it on the mountainside in Gordons Bay and if you get into the mussel beds , you just see mussels flying!! I think 20/30 pound fireline is useless as a leader but from 50 pound up is fine!!I have seen that thread on YouTube and the Braid actually breaks quicker than the mono. I dont use it in competitions , only social fishing. (Probably too scared it will break!!!!)

My 2 Malawian Kwacha anyway!!!

Lol wp,
So you don't really trust it ! As a matter of interst, why do you prefer a braid leader ?

I think it is my small brain that still tells me that it is stronger than nylon!!! I havent been cut off (yet!) on braid , but on nylon many a time!! Like they say "Its all in the mind" It works for me , but I cant guarentee anything!!

Thanks I've never actually tried it as a leader so thanks now I won't make the mistake of trying does any on think it will be a good main line for when the fish are skelm or still mono because I have 200 meters of pline 50pound still on the spool it's to thick to use as backing so what do u guys think will it be prime or pretty average

Lol Wp, the old adage "if its not broken, don't fix it" comes to mind. That's what makes fishing so interesting, we need to use what we feel most comfortable and confident with. I feel comfortable researching my equipment, that way when I blank, I can blame a new theory LOL !!!

Steve, why don't you try it as a leader, and compare it to mono and post us a report ???

80pound fireline as a leader works like a bomb.
its the non-stretch in the braid that loads ur rod better.
those who cast well will attest to this. as for the abbrasive resistence....i agree with wp34...i have seen mussels flying of rocks when the fireline touched them.

always try new things joff as whats on paper is not always the best idea.

Hello Guys

I also use 80lbs fireline for leader. I do a lot of plugging and so far this has proven itslef to be the answer when plugging for yellowtail that have a nasty habit of reefing you. So far my experience has the abrasion resistance of Fireline well above that of mono of similar diameter. I must check but I think that the 80lbs fireline has a diameter of .70mm so it also helps with casting as you do not have a huge not flying through your guides every cast.

My advice is give it a try and see whether it works. PM Whaler. I gave him a couple of meters to make a few leaders. He will be able to give you a fairly accurate answer.

"Gelspun lines have sometimes been described as being more resistant to abrasion than mono lines. My tests indicate that of the two lines with the same diameter, one gelspun, one monofilament-each under the same load-the gelspun will resist abrasion better than the monofilament.

However,of the two lines with the same breaking strain, one mono, the other gelspun-each under the same load-the monofilament will resist abrasion better than the gelspun line. This is an important consideration when choosing between gelspun and monofilament lines for fishing amongst rocks or other submerged objects""

With aknowledgement to  Geoff Wilson' from his "guide to Braid, Dacron & Gelspun lines."

Having said/written that ,I have used Spectra Power-Pro Gelspun, 55kg @.46mm diameter knotted to a Bimini with two figure 8's in a 1,2 meter length for spinning various species with great success, tied directly to the mainline of.55mm of choice.

Just another angle.
