This issue of The Carp Diaries takes on a slightly different edge. We had spent the weekend at Tzaneen and as some of you might know the lake is unforgiving be it the snags, distance fishing or just finding the fish proves each a challenge on you as an angler, your equipment and your mental capacity.
Which brings me to the reel issue. I own or have long owned four Daiwa Emcast 6000 Advance reels. To date they haven't given me any reason to change them - the one thing I would have preferred from Daiwa is a stronger stainless steel bail arm - but that's a small matter. Subsequently carpers their cranking power is comparatively high to some reels I fish and the spools are big enough for a load of braid as well as it's robust design.
Now I also own a set of three Daiwa Windcast Z5500 carp reels which is also a brilliant reel in their own right and have also landed me some big carp.
However I fished the Windcasts this weekend with one Emcast on a fourth rod but on retrieval the Emcast out does the Windcast on cranking power.
The question begs asking - where do I fish which reels - though the answer is very clear. And to think I contemplated selling three of the Emcasts. Good thing I didn't. Thus I reserve the Emcasts for Big lake fishing when dropping lines and the Wincasts (as back-up)and for the casting distances on the local waters as it were.
My bud fished his new Shimano Ultegra's - To be honest I could not fish that reel. There is a plastic housing close to the roller bearing and his line tended to get caught in the groove on this plastic piece. That can cost you fish or in his case line damage occurred. The plastic piece baffles me as to why it's there is the first place. Anyway maybe one of you carpers can explain.
For now carpers that's it. The session otherwise proved very difficult under the fluctuating weather pattern over the weekend, we managed 3 fish up to 27lb. One can say the result didn't equal the effort which we all have gone through I suppose.
Time for a reels and rod swap - the lake calls.
