Feeding balls/Bait balls

Update :  Went out to Vaal dam yesterday and tried out the homemade sling.

All I can say is "It works" ... I was easily able to sling out the bait balls to the +- 80m.

On one rod I had a tigernut on a hair rig and on the 2nd rod I had a boilie. Unfortunately no takers for the day. However the kids had lots of fun catching more than 30 carps between 1 and 2 kgs.

I noticed that it's a lot easier to sling out a smaller ball ( golf ball size) as compared to something bigger.

Tonight I'll make the next batch for this coming weekend.

A good binder which doesn't miff quickly and has a lot of proteins in it is Morvite porridge, available at any supermarket (We use this one and it goes a lot further than SuperCast -

On the issue of smaller feedballs going further - 40mm is the size we use in comp and a molasses 40mm can go over 150m on a windless day.

I feed with a 5.0lbs V Max spod rod which can cast up to 8oz so I can send a 90mm Ball out to 90+m with it or with a big sling 8 x 40mm feedballs to a tight group at 80m all at once

if you bought Mollasses Mix, could you just make bail balls with iy without adding a binder?
How long would they last!

Made a batch last night ... used about half a kg of Morevite.
Got 94 golf ball size bait balls out. Now to let it dry out for the rest of the week.

Update: Dumped the bait balls in early yesterday morning. Plenty of grass carps and muddies around. Managed to land a 5KG carp late in the day.
Still waiting for the BIG one to take.... not sure what to do to improve my catch rate.

Any ideas?...

christodeb, enigma, purely out of curiosity, do you guys find you start catching larger carp as your session draws to a close with the methods you describe for comp angling? i know in comps you're not going out to catch the largest fish, but i'm just wondering how the larger carp respond to mass baiting the way you guy do...

Pappi the bigger carp sometimes get to your swim, but they are generally not "specimen" fish. We have had schools of 5 to 6kg carp come into our swim but we have not really got bigger fish than that. I spoke to GP nel, he said that they have caught fish up to 8kg. Bloemhof is not really suited to specimen carping because of the vast numbers of fish.

Hi Guys
I bought Molasses Meal from BFA, it looks like tobacco. How would i use this to make bait balls. Do you have to cook it or what?

It's good on it's own, no need to cook it as the molasses is soluble. Because it's basically natural, theoretically you can't overdo it.

I used to add it gradually to a slightly "slushy" bomb/method mix, together with more groundbait (bomb,crumb,pellets,etc) till it did what I wanted it to do (loose or dense).

To experiment and to make balls, either mix a little water or, at first, to get the right consistency, put some in a bucket and use a spray bottle to spray the meal in increments to see how more and more sticky or binding it becomes. Also, because molasses has betaine, mix in some liquid amino booster and whatever other soluble/insoluble-protein ingedients, be it pellets, raw egg, chopped B/HNV boilies.

Anything not involving cooking perhaps?
