A father and son drowned in Pringle Bay, in the Western Cape, on Saturday, the National Sea Rescue Institute said.
"A young man had alerted bystanders to get assistance after his father and his grandfather were swept out to sea while crayfishing in shallow surf," said spokesperson Craig Lambinon.
"It appears that the two men were caught in rip currents and were swept off their feet and out to sea."
The bodies of the two men were recovered about 400m off shore.
