the egg thing is taken quite seriously by some boat skippers, i know a few Kalk bay fishermen that would really give you a hard time if they found out you have eggs on your lunch.

Another one was baboons, i have heard of some snoek fishermen that believed that if they saw baboons on the way to the slipway that the day would be really bad!

for me i have found that if i lose my first fish of the day to a seal the rest of the day will be crap!

Eating fish on the boat is a no no!

I won't go fishing without my boiled eggs but fish is a definate NO.
and these same snoek fishermen in Cape town that leave the eggs behind will have fried fish on board from the day before!!

When we were fishing commercially, my crew would quite happily bring boiled eggs and fish onboard. They never seemed to have a problem with it.

Fried geelbek, and a slice of bread with apricot jam on it is DELICIOUS at sea!!

Alot of this superstition is a mental thing. When other fisherman BELIEVE that its bad luck, the trip will result in a poor one.

Here's one that you've probably not heard of. Having a "MOFFIE" on board is a sure fire way of catching NOTHING!!

We were driving from Muizenberg side to Simons Town. We were 4 of us in my old Dodge SE, and as we had been fishing very hard that week, the skipper was driving the car, whilst me and two other crew members were catching some shut eye on the back seat. The car stops and the front door opens. A "lady of the night" had been hitch-hiking and my skipper had stopped to giver HER/HIM a lift to Simons Town. At the garage in Simons Town, we all get out and SHE/HIM thanks the skipper. By now the crew are fully awake and they see that its not a HER, but a HIM!! They get bedonnerd with the skipper, crying about how we might as well go home, as "MOFFIES" are bad luck. The cob fishing had been good, so off to sea we went anyways. Beleive it or not, we caught NOTHING that night!! ALL the other boats had 150-400kg's of cob, we had NOTHING!! BOGGEROL!! MOMBAK!!

Next night, we were back and the fishin' was the same, but we did manage to be top boat that night with just over a ton on board......:SSS

No eggs on my boat, noooooo eggs, except crushed eggshells whch in my mind can be a lureing mechanism if thrown out with lok.

Back in the 80's the egg thing was drilled into me by the Mossel Bay commercials.

Hi Lompies,

I guess there will be many views here ... either way all I can say is that as an active tournament angler I have never, ever, had any problems with eggs on the boat nor seen any practical difference in the number of fish we have weighed.

Fishermen are a superstitious bunch at the best of times and you will never convince them otherwise once they have made up their mind about what works or does not work.

Cheers
