Eating G.T...?

Gents..,
Hi to all out there ..,got REAL LUCKY this week-end and landed my P.B. of a Whopper.., 12 kg G.T. ..or 'Kingfish' as some would call it..! It is a story indeed ..,to be published soon..!!
Anyway..,always heard they do not make for good eating ..,but this was just NO..,chance of releasing this catch..,stood on a beach with few local- Ghanians around and would have got stabbed if i dared return this bugger to the oceans..! Not to get sidelined ..,Would like to know the best way to prepare this Fish's .., had to share with some locals ..,but manage to save some lekka fillets..!! Looks a lot like tuna meat..!!
I did have the idea to roast over hot coals.., lemon juice and Grounded Salt& Pepper..???
Any ideas welcome please...!!! Just to valuable to have it wasted...!

Sparri , Having just returned from fishing West Africa & catching a few of those , what you have is a Jack Crevalle ( Caranx Hippos ) not a GT . ~ Very good eating either fresh as capachio ( thin slices with lime juice , soya , a touch of wasabi & thin sliced onions ) or fillets cooked your favorite way ~ nice catch btw .

Hi there man.., and many thanks for your advice and update on the real specie caught...! See now ..,THAT's how we all learn i suppose...! Damn.., have to go and remark the books and my best catch..!!LOL..!!

Yep.., it was a great catch and this bugger made me run into the water.., stripped all my line off during it's first run.., had to fight it waist deep in the water and took me 30 minutes just to get some line onto my spool..! I caught it with very light tackle..,albeit a bit ignorant and innocent of me ..!Used a prawn and wraparound piece of chokka as bait... Do you know preferred bait for them..??

All ended up well though as you can see...

Sparrie ... They love lures big time ~ splashy poppers or spoons as a second best ~ reel as fast as you can , or they will just follow . ~ Better to cast to them when they smashing bait fish . Or a live bait .  ~ They pull like trains ~ you fortunate to get it on light tackle ~ I would run at least 4 ~ 5 feet of 80lb mono as a leader ( tail flukes are sharp hey ) . ~ But if the prawn & chokka work ~ stay with it ~ everything on that west coast eats prawn .

Hey Sparri,

Well done with your fish! Yellowfin kingies are good fun to catch.

Concerning the lures, it is like I an said they love poppers and plugs, but if you can through a decent size spoon, on even you dropshot lures they work just as well. it also depends on the area that you fish and if ther is a lot of water movement. they are ambush predators and usually the baitfish dont see them coming when the water al turbulent.

Should it be a day where there is not a lot of water movement but the colour of the water looks good then see if you can put out live bait on a medium to medium heavy rod.

I caught my 18kg kingy on live shad and that was a fight that I will never forget!

Kingfish is very nice eating fish, just dont over cook it as it tends to be dry if overcooked. Pop in the oven with whatever spices you prefer to have and deep fry you fish in a batter.
