if u fishing off the pier do ur self a favour , go get a camo worm the red one , tie a normal careent trace with 2 hooks (#6), but let the trace to the hooks be a little long so theres more movement, then what u do is drop the trace down the bottom closest to the pier structure and wait for the sinker to hit the bottom , now pick the tip of the rod up abt say 30 -40cm and drop it down again , continue doing this and see the results u get , i know its not drop shotting but i have had excellent results with it , i even put out a grunter trace with a full blood worm brown and got picked up by a skate , had him on for abt 5 mins and he went under the pier n cut me off.
with the #6 hook , break off a pice of the camo worm abt say 5-6cm or so and thread it over the hook and then let the point of the hook come out just a little .
I've had tons of fun when this style on bay of plenty pier.
