A Durban man's 4x4 was destroyed when the tide turned when his vehicle got stuck on the beach, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said at the weekend.

The man drove onto the Virginia Beach to take his dog for a walk at low tide on Friday night, said NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon.

However, the vehicle would not start when he returned and he had to abandon it to the incoming spring tide.

He and his dog spent the night a safe distance from the vehicle, which was pounded by the surf.

The NSRI later recovered the vehicle, but by then it had been completely ruined.

Lambinon said the man was not breaking the beach driving ban as there was a municipal bylaw permitting him to drive there. - Sapa
