Hi guys, i got a shimano 7ft mh fast action scimitar rod that i will be using off my boat for dropshot, what can this rod handle?

I cant find any specs regarding the max drag setting of my reel that the rod can handle.

Thanx guys.

I have the exact same one! Its an excellent rod! I really like it. I use it for bass, dropshot, "ultra" light tackle, and anything else that can come to mind that it can be used for...

Well It says 6-14lb not so? Thats what I rate it can handle. I went jigging for mullet the other day (yes I know its illegal:fbash) and jigged a mullet of about 2-2.5kg. Now if anyone has caught a mullet before, you should know that they can fight! My rod was basically 180 degrees, no lies. Landed it, released it, no problems with the rod or fish, but I did break the clicker on my, now dead, slade 2500 from fighting that mullet:(

So i think its a good rod and can handle good size fish, but stay within the drag rating just to be safe. I have put an okuma cimeron 30 with 8lb line on my shimitar, and its a wonderful combo

The line rating on the rod is 6-14lb, does that mean i can set my drag on my reel between 6 and 14lb?

I also broke the clicker on my Slade 2500 for no reason.

gerritp - No - as a rule of thumb you should set your drag at 20 - 30 % of the line rating - 20lb=5lb of drag  but unless you are using a lever drag reel this is hard to do. The ideal line for that rod is up to 14lb, therefore you should not have more than 3-4 lbs max drag - bear in mind this is the theory of it - much can change in practice.

Seems these clickers are a problem on the Slade 2500. I have one that also broke
Really? Shame. It put me off shimano a bit when mine broke. The slade can also be "finicky", like it sometimes took quite some effort to close the bail when turning the handle. Also when sand got into the handle knob, it was such a schlep to get it out: Take out cap, take out screw, take off handle, clean with ear bud, oil, clean, oil again, put back together only to find out you didnt get it all out! Meh, cummon, Im anal about maintainence but not that much!

How many times on this forum have I said the following ??????

UNDER R1000 buy DAIWA (R1300 with new prices)

OVER R1000 buy SHIMANO (R1300 with new prices)

now all together : as ek nie wil hoor nie dan moet ek maar voel !

I haven't seen the Regal so can only bulltwang you if I comment on it !

But the Exceller PLUS is brilliant !
and soon (on Monday) I'll have my Oceano 4500, CAN'T WAIT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oceano will be my "in between" reel, bigger than the 3000 Exceller Plus but smaller than the Stradic 8000 ...

Berkley air 9ft or maybe Shimano Exage 100 (10ft)
will definately also use it off the boat, wanne catch a Yellowtail and a MONSTER elf on the Oceano, on the Exceller Plus and also on the Stradic ...

The day I catch a 10kg elf, well that's the day I'll stop targetting them.

then

The day I catch a 15kg leerie, well that's the day I'll stop targetting them

then

The day I catch a 25kg Yellowtail, well that's the day I'll stop targetting them

then

there's still lots of fish in the ocean to target after those ...

Ofcourse all these goals have to be reached without TOUCHING BAIT.

Life is hard, and the choices even harder when you're a tackle sl#t like me ... so much tackle available, so little money and even less time to use all of it.

I think I should apply for collector status ...
